ANCHORAGE – Canisius freshman goaltender Keegan Asmundson had a sterling debut Saturday as he earned a 3-1 victory in net against Alaska Fairbanks in the Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena.

The Golden Griffins (1-1-0) got early goals from forwards Torrey Lindsay and Preston Shupe in the first period and did not allow the Nanooks (0-1-1) to crack the scoreboard until just 4.3 seconds remained in the game.

Canisius, from Buffalo, N.Y., and Atlantic Hockey, won despite being outshot 34-25. Asmundson, a redshirt from Inver Grove Heights, Minn., made 16 of his 33 saves in the third period to wrap up the victory.

UAF, from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, got 20 saves from goalie John Keeney in the loss.

The result means that both teams are eliminated from Kendall title contention, leaving the finale between Air Force (0-0-1) and host Alaska Anchorage (1-0-0) to determine the tournament’s winner.
