RECORD CROWD, CLASSIC COMEBACK: Fr. OH Sarah Johnson had 24 kills and 24 digs to anchor a huge UAA comeback Saturday as the Seawolves earned a 22-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-10 victory over rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex ... a program-record crowd of 884 watched as UAA also got 59 assists and 12 digs from Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi to beat UAF for the 4th straight time ... with the result, UAA also matched the program mark for consecutive home wins with its 15th in a row ... after stumbling early, the Seawolves got seven kills on .500 hitting from Johnson in the 3rd set to stay alive, and Fr. OH Julia Mackey got into the act in the 4th set with 5 of her 13 kills to tie the match … UAA took control early in the 5th, getting a kill from Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders (14 kills, 4 blocks) to go ahead 2-1 and never trailing … the Nanooks pulled within 8-5 midway through the frame before Jr. MB Jodi Huddleston started a 3-point surge with one of her 12 kills, and the Seawolves earned match point on a feed from Jafroudi to Mackey … Jr. MB Maureen Sabado collected 4 kills and a match-high 8 total blocks, while on the back row, Jr. L Siobhan Johansen added 16 digs and So. DS Jordan Bush had 10 … Johnson – a 6-footer from South Anchorage HS – finished with career-highs in kills, digs and attack percentage (.370), committing just 4 attack errors … Jafroudi, meanwhile, came one assist shy of her career-high, helping UAA out-hit the Nanooks .258 to .176 … the Seawolves won the blocking battle 11-5 as well, with Mackey picking up 1 solo and 4 block assists.
TEAM NOTES: UAA is 7-0 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex this season and has not dropped a home match since Sept. 8, 2011, a 3-2 loss to Western Oregon … the Seawolves have won 32 of their last 34 home matches and are 35-4 at the WFSC since 2009 … UAA is 8-0 when posting a higher hitting percentage and 6-0 when outblocking its opponents this year … by going the distance against CWU, NNU and UAF, the Seawolves accomplished another program-first by winning three straight home matches by 3-2 scores … the Seawolves rank 2nd in the GNAC stats in three of the seven major statistical categories — kills per set (13.1), assists per set (12.2) and opponent attack pct. ’WOLF NOTES: Reigning GNAC Newcomer of the Year and 2nd-Team all-league Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi currently ranks 2nd in the league and 13th nationally with 11.10 assists per set … she also paces the GNAC with 0.50 aces per set … with 59 assists in Saturday’s win over UAF, Jafroudi came one shy of her career high and moved into 9th place on UAA’s career list with 1,463 … the Californian is 2nd in career assists per set, trailing former GNAC Player-of-the-Year Calli Scott (2008-09) by a narrow 10.62 to 10.53 margin … in September, Jafroudi was the MVP of UAA’s own SpringHill Suites Invitational, pacing a Seawolf offense that hit .241 … Jafroudi’s 6 aces against Dixie State on Sept. 7 were the most for a Seawolf since 2006 and the most for a GNAC player this year … Fr. OH Sarah Johnson has shown off her all-around skills early in her career, currently ranking 11th in the GNAC in kills per set (3.04) and 12th in digs per set (3.07) … the South Anchorage HS product is one of only two GNAC players to be averaging better than 3.00 kills and digs … Johnson was named the GNAC Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 10-16 after posting a .308 attack percentage and averages of 3.40 kills and 3.20 digs in wins over CWU and NNU … she leads the Seawolves with five double-doubles, including a 24-kill, 24-dig performance in a 3-2 home win over UAF … with Johnson, Fr. MB Maureen Sabado … after missing the first eight matches, the Kodiak product has posted a team-best 1.33 blocks per set and is No. 2 on the squad in attack percentage (.301) … Sabado premiered against CWU by becoming the first Seawolf in nearly a year to tally 10 total blocks … Jr. L Siobhan Johansen has taken over full-time duties at libero this season, ranking 8th in the GNAC with 4.17 digs per set and 5th with 0.33 aces per set … the Palmer (Colony HS) native’s 25 digs at WOU are the most in a 3-set GNAC match so far this year … Sr. OH/DS Nikkie Viotto ranks in UAA’s career top 20 in four categories — total aces (t-8th, 107), aces per set (9th, 0.31), total digs (19th, 787) and sets played (19th, 341) … the Eagle River product will also move into the top 20 in matches played when she makes her 94th career appearance Saturday vs. UAF … after playing mainly as a serving specialist last year, So. DS Jordan Bush has stepped up her role, playing in all 43 sets and ranking 5th on the team with 2.00 dps … Bush matched her career-high for the third time with 3 aces — all in the first set — at Saint Martin’s last week.
SPRINGHILL CHAMPS: The Seawolves won the title of their own SpringHill Suites Invitational, Sept. 7-8, winning all four matches to begin the home campaign … UAA dropped only one set in victories over Dixie State, Adelphi and Western New Mexico (twice) as Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi earned tournament Most Outstanding Player honors … Jafroudi led the event with 10.92 assists and 1.00 aces per set, and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders (4.00 kps, .286 att%), Fr. OH Julia Mackey (3.31 kps, .274 att%, 2.85 dps) and Fr. OH Sarah Johnson (2.15 kps, 2.77 dps) … Jafroudi paced the 25-20, 25-21, 25-16 sweep of WNMU in the title match with 35 assists, 6 digs and 3 aces, while Mackey accounted for 12 kills on .323 hitting and 9 digs … the title was UAA’s third straight and fifth overall in the tournament’s 16-year history … UAA is now 40-24 all-time in tourney play, winning 11 of its last 12.
