II competition, suffering their only losses to Grand Valley State (20-18 in the 5th) and at nationally ranked BYU-Hawaii ... WOU is led by Danielle Reese (3.09 kps, .184 att%, 2.56 dps) and Krissi Kemper (2.35 kps, .379 att%, 1.19 bps) ... Saint Martin's went 0-3 against D-II competition in Hawaii to begin the season, before earning home wins last week over New Hope Christian and Walla Walla ... the Saints are led by Kristyn Ross (2.47 kps, 1.43 att%, 3.59 dps) and Katy Ferguson (2.41 kps, .345 att%, 0.71 bps).

'WOLVES EKE PAST CWU, NNU: The Seawolves earned a pair of hard-fought, 5-set victories to begin the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season against Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene at home last week ... in the first match, Fr. OH Sarah Johnson had 16 kills and 15 digs in the 25-19, 25-21, 26-28, 17-25, 15-10 decision ... the Seawolves also got a sterling debut from So. MB Maureen Sabado, who had 10 kills and 10 total blocks, while Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi had 59 assists to come just one shy of her career-high ... Fr. OH Julia Mackey had 16 kills and 7 block assists, Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders added 15 kills, and Jr. MB Jodi Huddleston had 11 to make it five Seawolves with double-digit kills ... Sabado - a Kodiak product who sat out the 2011 season after transferring from San Diego City College - saw her first live action as a Seawolf and delivered a team-best .381 att% ... Jr. L Siobhan Johansen led UAA with 19 digs ... on Saturday, Johnson had career-highs of 18 kills and 17 digs as UAA overcame NNU, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22, 27-29, 15-6 ... the Seawolves won their 6th straight thanks also to Huddleston, who tallied 14 kills on match-best .345 hitting ... Sabado finished with 7 total blocks, Mackey had 11 kills on .267 hitting, and Zanders chipped in 10 kills and 5 total blocks, including 3 solos ... Jafroudi produced 51 assists, 9 digs and 3 block assists, while Johansen and Sr. DS/OH Nikkie Viotto earned 18 and 15 digs, respectively.

TEAM NOTES: UAA's win over NNU ran its home win streak to 14, including six this season ... the Seawolves have now won 31 of their last 33 home matches and are 34-4 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex since 2009 ... the Seawolves rank 2nd in the GNAC stats in four of the seven major statistical categories - kills per set (13.0), assists per set (12.2), aces per set (1.8) and opponent attack pct. (.141) ... the Seawolves are 0-1 this season and 8-19 overall against ranked opponents under head coach Chris Green; prior to Green's arrival in 2008, UAA had lost 32 straight matches to ranked foes.

GNAC TOP GUN: Fr. OH Sarah Johnson was named the GNAC Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after the South Anchorage High product posted a .308 attack percentage and averages of 3.40 kills and 3.20 digs per set in the wins over CWU and NNU ... after posting 16 kills and 15 digs on Thursday against the Wildcats, Johnson helped UAA run its win streak to six on Saturday with career-highs of 18 kills, 17 digs and a .341 attack percentage against the Crusaders ... she leads the Seawolves with four double-doubles and is one of just three GNAC players to rank among the top-15 league leaders in both kills (2.81 kps) and digs (2.92 dps) averages.

MORE PLAYER NOTES: Reigning GNAC Newcomer of the Year and 2nd-Team all-league Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi has picked up where she left off, currently ranking 2nd with 11.00 assists per set and leading the league in aces per set at 0.59 ... with 110 assists last week, including 59 in Thursday's win over CWU, Jafroudi moved into 10th place on UAA's career assists list, now with 1,295 ... the Californian earned MVP honors at UAA's own SpringHill Suites Invitational, Sept. 7-8, after pacing a Seawolf offense that hit .241, while her 6 aces against Dixie State were the most for a Seawolf since 2006 ... with Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders (2nd, 3.64 kps) and Fr. OH Julia Mackey (4th, 3.32 kps), the Seawolves have two of the GNAC's top four leaders in kills per set ... Jr. MB Jodi Huddleston leads the Seawolves and ranks 11th in the GNAC with a .311 attack pct. ... the Western Nebraska CC transfer is hitting .328 during UAA's current 6-match win streak, boosted by a team-season-best .643 (9-0-14) performance against Western New Mexico ... UAA is getting 97 percent of its kills output from newcomers, including the recent addition of 14 kills by So. MB Maureen Sabado last week ... after missing the first eight maches, Sabado premiered against CWU by becoming the first Seawolf in nearly a year to tally 10 total blocks ... the Kodiak product also had 7 stuffs against NNU for a lofty 1.70 bps average thus far, while hitting .282 ... Jr. L Siobhan Johansen has taken over full-time duties at libero this season, ranking 7th in the GNAC with 3.97 digs per set and 4th with 0.43 aces per set ... after seeing her career-long streak of 325 consecutive sets played end Sept. 7 because of a sprained ankle, Sr. OH/DS Nikkie Viotto returned to the Seawolf lineup last week, producing a season-high 15 digs against NNU ... with her 7 digs against CWU, Viotto now ranks in UAA's career top 20 in four categories - aces per set (9th, 0.32), total aces (10th, 106), total digs (19th, 769) and sets played (20th, 335) ... the Eagle River product needs just four more aces to move into the No. 7 spot on that list ... after playing mainly as a serving specialist last year, So. DS Jordan Bush has stepped up her role, playing in all 37 sets and ranking 5th on the team with 1.84 dps.

SPRINGHILL CHAMPS: The Seawolves won the title of their own SpringHill Suites Invitational, Sept. 7-8, winning all four matches to begin the home campaign ... UAA dropped only one set in victories over Dixie State, Adelphi and Western New Mexico (twice) as Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi earned tournament Most Outstanding Player honors ... Jafroudi led the event with 10.92 assists and 1.00 aces per set, and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders (4.00 kps, .286 att%), Fr. OH Julia Mackey (3.31 kps, .274 att%, 2.85 dps) and Fr. OH Sarah Johnson (2.15 kps, 2.77 dps) ... Jafroudi paced the 25-20, 25-21, 25-16 sweep of WNMU in the title match with 35 assists, 6 digs and 3 aces, while Mackey accounted for 12 kills on .323 hitting and 9 digs ... the title was UAA's third straight and fifth overall in the tournament's 16-year history ... UAA is now 40-24 all-time in tourney play, winning 11 of its last 12.

SEAWOLVES PICKED 3RD IN POLL: The Seawolves were tabbed for third place in the 2012 GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Aug. 21 ... UAA received 70 points in the balloting, narrowly trailing Western Washington and Western Oregon:
