Adelphi, from Garden City, N.Y., began its season last week with a 3-1 record against regional competition at the Millersville (Pa.) tournament ... the Panthers are members of the Northeast-10 Conference ... Western New Mexico started the season with four losses at the Grand Canyon tournament last week, including 5-set losses to Central Washington and nationally ranked UC San Diego ...the Mustangs, from Silver City, N.M., also took a set from 3rd-ranked Cal St.-San Bernardino.

ADELPHI: First meeting
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Now known as the SpringHill Suites Invitational, this will be the 16th edition of the tournament, returning after a two-year absence ... in 2009, the Seawolves earned their fourth title (2002, '03, '08, '09) by defeating Academy of Art in the championship match ... the Seawolves have produced the tournament's Most Outstanding Player four times, most recently Calli Scott in 2008 and '09 ... UAA is 36-24 all-time in tourney play, winning seven of its last eight.
TOURNEY FORMAT: The format for the SpringHill Suites Invitational will remain the same as in recent years with the four teams playing a round-robin pool ... the teams with the top two records will face off in Saturday's 7 p.m. title match, preceded by the 5 p.m. consolation match ... an exhaustive list of tiebreakers for pool play will be adhered to if necessary ... an All-Tournament Team, consisting of five players, plus a Most Outstanding Player, will be announced at the conclusion of the title match.
DOWN BY THE SEASIDE: The Seawolves went 1-3 on their season-opening trip to the Otter Classic in Seaside, Calif., last week ... on Aug. 31, UAA dropped a hard-fought 4-setter to No. 23 Minnesota State before falling in three sets to regional foe San Francisco State ... on Saturday, UAA thoroughly secured its first victory with a sweep of Academy of Art, before losing again in four to the host team, Cal State-Monterey Bay ... Fr. OH Julia Mackey was the team's most consistent hitter, connecting on at least 11 kills in each match with a .345 attack percentage ... Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders led UAA with 4.15 kills per set, boosted by a 25-kill effort in the loss to CSUMB, while fellow Fr. OH Sarah Johnson was a double-threat, averaging 3.00 kps and 2.85 digs per set ... another newcomer, Jr. MB Jodi Huddleston, hit .271 overall and led the team with 0.64 blocks per set ... Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi averaged 11.07 assists per set, tallying a career-high-tying 60 against CSUMB in the finale, while Jr. L Siobhan Johansen took over the libero role with 5.00 digs per game, totaling a career-high 27 against CSUMB.
2012 SEAWOLF PREVIEW: The Seawolves return three starters - Sr. OH/DS Nikkie Viotto, Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi and Jr. S/DS Siobhan Johansen - along with redshirt So. L/DS Jordan Bush from last year's 18-9 squad that finished runner-up in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference ... Viotto is the team's only 4th-year senior, having never missed a set in her Seawolf career, while Jafroudi was the GNAC's 2011 Newcomer of the Year and a 2nd-team all-conference selection.
2011 SEASON RECAP: The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team posted its unprecedented fourth straight winning season and third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, finishing with an 18-9 overall record and a runner-up GNAC finish ... the Seawolves set a school record with their .236 team attack percentage and won 14 of 16 matches over a 2-month stretch as they came just one win shy of the league title ... Sr. OH Jackie Matthisen was voted the GNAC Player of the Year, while then-Jr. S Kimya Jafroudi was the league's Newcomer of the Year ... Matthisen and Robyn Burton were both unanimous 1st Team All-GNAC selections, while Burton also became the second All-American in program history.
MORE PLAYER NOTES: Now the team's only 4-year senior, OH/DS Nikkie Viotto has played in every set of every match of her Seawolf career ... playing full-time at outside hitter for the first time last season, Viotto averaged 2.10 kps and 2.74 dps, while leading the GNAC with 0.40 aces per set ... on UAA's career lists Viotto is 7th in aces per set (0.33) and tied for 13th in total aces (102) ... Jr. S/L Siobhan Johansen was one of five Seawolves to play in all 97 sets in 2011 ... the Colony High product ranked 2nd on the team in assists (2.28 apg) and serve pct. (.921), plus 4th in digs per set (2.00) ... in her third year in the program, So. L/DS Jordan Bush could see increased playing time in 2012 ... the Washington native led UAA in both serve pct. (.933) and service ace-to-error ratio (1.09) in 2011.
SEAWOLVES PICKED 3RD IN POLL: The Seawolves were tabbed for third place in the 2012 GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Aug. 21 ... UAA received 70 points in the balloting, narrowly trailing Western Washington and Western Oregon:
