2011 UAA Volleyball Season Review

BRIEF SEASON RECAP: The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team posted its unprecedented fourth straight winning season and third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, finishing with an 18-9 overall record and a runner-up GNAC finish ... the Seawolves set a school record with their .236 team attack percentage and won 14 of 16 matches over a 2-month stretch as they came just one win shy of the league title ... Sr. OH Jackie Matthisen was voted the GNAC Player of the Year, while Jr. S Kimya Jafroudi was the league's Newcomer of the Year ... Matthisen and So. MB Robyn Burton were both unanimous 1st Team All-GNAC selections, while Burton also became the second All-American in program history.

NCAA HISTORY: The Seawolves made their third straight trip and fifth in program history to the NCAA Tournament (1989, 1990, 2009, 2010, 2011) ... UAA - seeded No. 8 - lost in the 1st Round for the second straight year, this time falling to nationally top-ranked and eventual NCAA runner-up Cal State San Bernardino, 3-1, on the Coyotes' home court on Nov. 17 ... Sr. OH Jackie Matthisen led UAA with 14 kills, 11 digs and 3 block assists, while So. MB Robyn Burton tallied 14 kills on .619 hitting (14-1-21), plus 4 total blocks to earn All-Tournament Team honors ... Jr. S Kimya Jafroudi had 49 assists and 8 digs and Jr. OH Nikkie Viotto had 9 kills and 4 aces as the Seawolves became just the sixth team in 28 matches to take a set from the Coyotes ... UAA was the No. 5 seed in 2009 when it earned its first-ever NCAA win with a 5-set (15-12) 1st-round victory over Hawaii-Hilo in San Bernardino.

TEAM NOTES: The Seawolves led the GNAC in attack percentage (.236), assists per set (12.55) and aces per set (1.61), while ranking 2nd in kills per set (13.36) and blocks per set (2.13) ... the .236 attack pct. easily surpassed the school record of .224 in 2003, while the 13.4 kps topped the previous record of 13.1 from 1996 ... the Seawolves tied the program record for conference victories with 14, though with the benefit of two more matches than the 14-2, GNAC-title squad of 2009 ... the Seawolves were 2-3 this season and are 8-18 overall against ranked opponents under Green; prior to Green's arrival in 2008, UAA had lost 32 straight matches to ranked foes ... the Seawolves have posted winning records in four straight seasons for the first time in program history (since 1980) ... over the last three seasons, UAA now has a 22-4 record during the second half of the GNAC campaign, including 8-0 in their title season of 2009 ... with an 8-match home win streak to end the year, UAA has won 25 of its last 27 home matches and gone 28-4 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex since 2009 ... UAA topped the .400 attack pct. mark - something it had not done since 2002 - twice this year, in home wins over UAF (.412) and NNU (.419) ... the NNU match was UAA's best-hitting night since Aug. 25, 2000 vs. St. Cloud State ... UAA set a home attendance record this year with an average of 667 fans per match, easily topping the record of 553 from last year ... the crowds against UAF (784) and WWU (765) were the 5th- and 6th-highest attendances in program history.

NATIONAL STATS: In the final D-II national stats, UAA ranked 29th in assists per set (12.55), 31st in attack pct. (.236) and 32nd in both blocks  per set (2.13) and kills per set (13.36) ... individually, So. MB Robyn Burton rated 3rd in the country in attack pct. (.416) and 29th in blocks per set (1.12), Sr. OH Jackie Matthisen was 18th in kills per set (4.14) and 31st in points per set (4.5), and Jr. S Kimya Jafroudi was 45th in assists per set (10.22).

MATTHISEN TABBED GNAC'S BEST: For the second time in three seasons, a Seawolf was selected the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Player of the Year as Sr. OH Jackie Matthisen won the award ... Matthisen joined Calli Scott (2009) and Jen Szczerbinski (1992, Pac West Conf.) as the third Seawolf to win a league POY honor ... the 5-11 Anchorage native was one of three unanimous 1st Team All-GNAC choices, along with both Daktronics and AVCA All-West Region selections ... also an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, she ranked 2nd in the GNAC overall stats in kills (4.14) and points (4.50) per set, plus 11th in attack percentage (.236) and 14th in digs per set (2.92); her numbers improved in GNAC play, tallying a league-best 4.45 kps and 4.78 pps, along with a .267 attack percentage ... the former East Anchorage High School standout posted 15 of her 35 career double-doubles this year as well ... a 1st-team honoree in 2009 and a 2nd-teamer in 2010, Matthisen had GNAC-highs for kills in a match (27 at league champ Seattle Pacific) and in a 3-setter (21 vs. Saints Martin's) in 2011 ... after transferring from Western Oregon following her freshman year, Matthisen ended her 3-year Seawolf career No. 3 on UAA's all-time lists for total kills (1,134), kills per set (3.66) and total attacks (3,188), along with No. 12 in attack pct. (.228), No. 15 in digs per set (2.77) and No. 16 in total digs (859) ... she was also a 3-time All-GNAC Academic Team selection.

SUPERB SOPH: After earning 2nd-team all-league honors as a freshman, MB Robyn Burton delivered the most impressive sophomore campaign in program history 2011, becoming the first Seawolf to earn All-America honors on both the AVCA (2nd Team) and Daktronics (3rd Team) ballots ... she was also the lone sophomore or freshman to make 1st Team All-GNAC, doing so unanimously ... the 5-11 Eagle river native led the GNAC stats by wide margins in both attack percentage (.416) and blocks per set (1.12), and ranked 9th in kills (3.23) and points (3.92) per set ... her attack percentage ranked 3rd nationally and crushed Tammy Middaugh's 29-year-old school record of .333 ... Burton hit .500 or better in 12 matches, including a GNAC season-best .765 against Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 15 ... the Chugiak High product posted league-bests of 1.33 bps and .434 hitting in conference matches and was a two-time GNAC Player of the Week ... she was also an all-tournament selection at the Coyote Labor Day Classic in September ... with half of her career still to play, Burton is already the new No. 1 on UAA's career attack pct. list at .365, plus No. 2 in bps (1.19), No. 10 in block assists (194) and total blocks (234), and tied for 16th in solo blocks (40).

JAFROUDI TOP NEWCOMER: Jr. S Kimya Jafroudi was picked as the 2011 GNAC Newcomer of the Year, joining fellow setter Calli Scott (2008) as the second Seawolf to win the award ... Jafroudi was also a 2nd Team All-GNAC pick after helping the Seawolves to a school .236 team hitting percentage - 12 points better than the school record ... the Orange Coast College transfer currently ranked 5th in the league with 10.22 assists per set, but she increased her numbers to 11.16 in league-only play, posting four performances of 50-plus assists ... Jafroudi's 60 assists against Central Washington on Nov. 5 were the most by a Seawolf since Scott's 64 in a 5-set win at BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 11, 2009 ... she was the Sept. 26-Oct. 2 GNAC Player of the Week and her 45 assists against Dominguez Hills on Sept. 3 tied for the most by a GNAC player in a 3-setter this year.

MORE PLAYER NOTES: Playing full-time at outside hitter for the first time in three years, Jr. OH Nikkie Viotto averaged 2.10 kps and 2.74 dps, while leading the GNAC with 0.40 aces per set ... on UAA's career lists Viotto is 7th in aces per set (0.33) and tied for 13th in total aces (102) ... Viotto has played in every set of every match of her Seawolf career ... So. L Quincy Haught tallied double-digit digs in 24 of 27 matches in 2011 ... the Arizona native surpassed her previous career-high by seven digs with 32 in UAA's win over Central Washington on Nov. 5, marking UAA's first 30-dig performance since Stacie Meisner had 32 in a 5-set win at CWU on Sept. 26, 2009 ... Haught ranked 7th in the GNAC with 4.34 dps and 6th with 0.32 aces per set ... she is currently 8th on UAA's career dps list at 3.30 ... Jr. RS Ariel Austin picked up her play over the second half of the season and was rewarded with All-GNAC Honorable Mention honors ... the Western Nebraska CC transfer held GNAC top-20 ranks in attack pct. (.231, 13th), kills per set (2.36, 16th) and blocks per set (0.69, 18th), with those numbers all improving in league-only play to .249 att. pct., 2.45 kps and 0.79 bps ... Jr. MB Miranda Doing ranked 7th in the GNAC with 0.89 bps and would have ranked 5th in attack percentage at .290 if she met the minimum number of attacks per set ... Doing's 8 total blocks against Chaminade tied for the most for a GNAC player in a 3-setter in 2011 ... Sr. DS McKenzie Moss became the first player in program history to play for teams with winning records in four straight seasons ... this season the local Bartlett High product ranked 3rd in the GNAC with 0.34 aces per set joined Sr. OH Jackie Matthisen and Viotto as the first Seawolves to play on three NCAA Tournament squads ... So. S/DS Siobhan Johansen was one of five Seawolves to play in all 97 sets in 2011 ... the Colony High product ranked 2nd on the team in assists (2.28 apg) and serve pct. (.921), plus 4th in digs per set (2.00).

SMART SEAWOLVES: Four Seawolves were among the 40 student-athletes on the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Volleyball Team ... Jr. OH Nikkie Viotto (Eagle River HS) produced the Seawolves' highest overall grade-point average with a 3.81 as a journalism & public communications major ... it was the second career all-league academic honor for Viotto, who has played in every set during her first three seasons ... Sr. OH Jackie Matthisen (East Anchorage HS) earned her third career honor with a 3.32 GPA in biological sciences ... earning recognition for the first time were So. S/DS Siobhan Johansen (Palmer/Colony HS) for her 3.46 GPA as an undeclared major, along with Sr. OH/DS McKenzie Moss (Anchorage/Bartlett HS) with a 3.32 in civil engineering ... UAA's four honorees equaled a program-best - in any league - from the 1992, 2001 and 2006 seasons.

SEAWOLVES PICKED 3RD IN POLL: The Seawolves were tabbed for third place in the 2011 GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Aug. 18 ...
