Kurgat shatters national 5K mark

SEATTLE – Caroline Kurgat of Alaska Anchorage won the 5,000 in a time of 15:28.46, shattering the all-time NCAA Div. II record by over 30 seconds tonight in Seattle.

Kurgat broke the previous record of 16:01.09 set by Neely Spence of Shippensburg set in 2011.

This is the second straight race that Kurgat has set a national record after running 9:07.05 for 3,000 two weeks ago.

Wesley Kirui was the top UAA finisher in the men's 5,000 placing eighth (14:18.62). Edwin Kangogo finished 18th (14:39.15).

Chris Brake finished 12th in the high jump (6-4), and Enrique Campbell was 39th in the 200 (25.27).

The men's distance medley relay of Drew Johnson, Joshua Jackman, Eduardo Orozco and Felix Kemboi finished 12th (10:10.09).

The women's distance medley relay of Ruth Cvancara, Tylantiss Atlas, Dani McCormick and Nancy Jeptoo finished 18th (11:53.47).

The Seawolves will compete in day two of the Husky Invite Saturday.
