SCOUTING REPORT: Picked to finish last in the South Division in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason poll, Northwood is coming off an 11-17 overall record in 2017-18 ... the Midland, Mich., program started with losses last week to Indianapolis (71-59) and No. 1 Bellarmine (88-77) at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Saginaw, Mich. ... the Timberwolves are led by Alec Marty (16.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.0 spg, .636 3FG) and Jack Ammerman (14.0 ppg, 2.5 apg, .400 3FG) ... another GLICAC program, Lake Superior State is making its regular-season debut Friday against UAF, having played just one exhibition contest so far ... the Lakers, from Sault Ste. Marie on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, went 25-8 a year ago and advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament ... trying to replace four senior starters, LSSU is led by Sr. F Blake Marquardt (8.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, .497 FG, .867 FT).

HAWAIIAN SPLIT: The Seawolves earned a critical split of their first NCAA Div. II games this season, beating Hawaii Pacific 83-79 and losing to Chaminade 71-62 last week in Honolulu ... in the first contest, Jr. F Niko Bevens scored 28 points (9-15 FG, 8-13 3FG) – setting a Seawolf program record with seven first-half treys – and UAA made big plays down the stretch to erase a 45-38 halftime deficit against the Sharks ... Jr. G Jack Macdonald scored 15 points (6-11 FG), Sr. C Brian Pearson had 10 points (5-6 FG) and 8 rebounds, and Jr. G Tyler Brimhall overcame foul trouble to tally all of his 11 points and 7 rebounds after halftime in the victory ... on Saturday, UAA claimed a late lead but saw the Silverswords finish the game with a 13-1 run ... Brimhall claimed his first collegiate double-double and UAA's first this season with 23 points (7-15 FG, 3-6 3FG, 6-8 FT) and 11 rebounds as he made the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge all-tournament team, and Macdonald contributed 13 points, 4 assists and no turnovers in the loss.
TEAM NOTES: The Seawolves have shown more of a vintage three-point shooting touch again in 2018-19, with their .390 3FG% thus far ranking as the program's best since 2013-14 when they shot .413 ... UAA's offense has shown vast improvement in all categories over last season as well, with the 82 points against Antelope Valley and the 83 against Hawaii Pacific already surpassing its 2017-18 season high ... the Seawolves are seeking the program's 14th straight winning season and the 36th in 42 years ... the Seawolves have earned eight straight winning GNAC records and qualified for the GNAC Tournament every year since its founding in 2011.
PAW PRINTS: Jr. G/F Tyler Brimhall was UAA's lone representative on the Preseason All-GNAC Team and so far the North Idaho College transfer has not disappointed, ranking 4th in the league in scoring (21.5 ppg), 6th in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and 9th in FT% (.852) ... the Utah native has scored at least 23 points in three games thus far, while grabbing at least seven rebounds in all four contests ... UAA's other impact transfer, Jr. F Niko Bevens has tallied double digits in three of four games, including a UAA season-high 28 points in the 83-79 road win over Hawaii Pacific ... Bevens' seven first-half treys against HPU were the most ever for a Seawolf before the break and his eight 3FGs in the victory tied for 7th on UAA's single-game list ... Bevens ranks 6th in scoring (16.8 ppg) and 2nd in 3FGs per game (3.8) in the early GNAC stats ... with 13.5 ppg, Jr. G Jack Macdonald has doubled his scoring production from last season (6.3 ppg), while leading UAA with an 11-to-3 assist-turnover ratio ... one of two Australians and four international players on the roster, the Melbourne native had scored at least 13 points in three of the four games, setting his career high with 20 points in the season-opening win over Antelope Valley ... UAA's most experienced player, Sr. C Brian Pearson is lead the Seawolves with a .500 FG% and is tied for second on the team with 4.0 rpg ... the Nevadan is 9th on UAA's career list for blocks (59) and 6th in blocks per game (0.8) ... the other Aussie, So. Brennan Rymer is also showing improvement from his rookie season, averaging 6.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg and a team-high 4.0 apg, ranking 4th in the GNAC in assists ... Rymer also paces the Seawolves and ranks 7th in the league with 1.8 spg.
TRUST IN RUSTY: Now in his 15th year at the helm, head coach Rusty Osborne (268-153) has led the Seawolves to 13 straight winning seasons, along with five NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the 2008 NCAA D-II Semifinals … the longest tenured coach in program history and in the GNAC, he became the first UAA basketball coach to reach 200 career victories when the Seawolves beat Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 10, 2015 … Osborne captured his first career GNAC and NABC West District coach-of-the-year awards in 2008 after becoming the second coach to lead UAA to three consecutive NCAA berths (2006-08), and in 2011-12 his Seawolves posted a 24-10 record to equal the 2nd-most victories in program history; Osborne's 2007-08 club holds that record with a 29-6 mark … before taking over the head job in 2004-05, the Texas native previously served 13 seasons (1991-04) as a UAA assistant, including 11 years as the top assistant … the Seawolves have won over 60 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament ... Osborne is assisted by Ryan Orton (5th season) and Shane Rinner (7th season).
