FRESNO, Calif. – Niko Bevens scored 14 points and Tyler Brimhall recorded a double-double to pace the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team Tuesday in a 91-63 loss to Div. I host Fresno State at the Save Mart Center.
Playing the game as an exhibition under NCAA rules, the Seawolves got 11 points and 10 rebounds from Brimhall, plus nine points from senior center Brian Pearson and four assists from freshman guard Travis Adams.
Fresno State was led by 23 points from guard Braxton Huggins and eight rebounds from Christian Gray as the Bulldogs – picked for No. 5 in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll – outshot the Seawolves .475 to .338 in their regular-season opener.
“This was another good learning experience for our team, however we need to learn to compete for more than 20 minutes,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne.
The Seawolves competed well early, drawing within 27-24 on a hook shot by Pearson with 7:25 remaining in the opening half. Fresno State would extend to a 41-32 halftime edge, however, and pull away in the second stanza.
UAA (2-0) plays its first games against fellow NCAA Div. II opponents this week in Honolulu, facing Hawaii Pacific on Friday (1 p.m. AST) and Chaminade on Saturday (3:30 p.m. AST). Check the men’s basketball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com for links to live stats for both contests.
