In Anchorage: First meeting / Last: CSUB 92-61 (3/11/94 at UC Riverside) / Notes: All four previous meetings occurred between 1988 and 1994 in the NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships ... UAA won the first encounter, 89-82 in overtime, Mar. 11, 1988 in Hayward, Calif., on its way to the national title game that year ... Bakersfield earned double-digit victories in 1991, 1993 and 1994.
vs. Idaho: UAA leads 2-0
In Anchorage: UAA leads 1-0 / Last: UAA 64-61 (12/1/91 at Sullivan Arena) / Notes: UAA beat Idaho to claim 4th place on the final day of the 1991 Shootout ... the Seawolves earned an 82-71 regular-season road win over the Vandals on Dec. 5, 1977 – early in UAA's first season of NCAA Div. II membership.
vs. Santa Clara: Santa Clara leads 2-1
In Anchorage: UAA leads 1-0 / Last: SCU 78-75 (12/29/94 at SCU) / Notes: Both of Santa Clara's victories over UAA came during its own holiday-season tournament, with the first meeting occurring on Dec. 29, 1994 (85-66) ... UAA's win came in the consolation semifinal round of the 1991 Shootout, just one day before knocking off Idaho.
'DISCRETIONARY' GAMES: For the host Seawolves – the tournament's only NCAA Div. II team – two of their three GCI Great Alaska Shootout games will be counted as 'discretionary exemptions,' meaning the result and statistics will count regularly for their opponent but as an exhibition for UAA ... that will be the case for the CSU Bakersfield and final-round games, while the Seawolves' second contest (vs. Idaho or Santa Clara) will count as a regular game for both teams.
UAA VS. D-I: Division II UAA owns a 55-139 all-time record against Division I opponents (not counting exhibitions) … the Seawolves' biggest upset came during the 1988-89 campaign when they beat then-No. 2 and undefeated Michigan, 70-66, at the Utah Seiko Classic; the Wolverines went on to win the NCAA title that year ... including discretionary exhibition wins in the Shootout against Rice in 2014, Drexel in 2015 and Drake in 2016, UAA has beaten at least one Division I school in 30 of the last 33 seasons.
SEAWOLVES IN THE SHOOTOUT: The Seawolves – the only Division II team and the only school to appear in every GCI Great Alaska Shootout – sport a 38-79 all-time mark in the tournament, including 16-29 since 2002 … the Seawolves have won at least one game in 32 of 39 Shootouts ... in 2016, UAA lost 85-79 to Buffalo the first round and 71-65 to Oakland in the consolation semifinals, before all-tourney selection Diante Mitchell helped the Seawolves to a 74-69 win over Drake in the 7th-place game.
HOLY NAMES RECAP: The Seawolves got on the winning track last week with a pair of hard-fought home victories over NCAA Div. II West Region foe Holy Names ... in Friday's contest, Sr. F Jacob Lampkin dominated the interior with 17 points (8-12 FG) and 14 rebounds, while Sr. G D.J. Ursery delivered 19 points (9-17 FG), 5 rebounds and 2 steals to fend off the Hawks 63-55 ... Sr. G Drew Peterson also propelled the victory with 12 points (2-5 3FG, 4-4 FT), and career-high 6 rebounds, 3 assists, no turnovers and a key steal in the final 2 minutes, while Sr. PG Maleke Haynes had 8 points (6-6 FT) and a UAA season-high 8 assists ... in the rematch, Lampkin tallied 12 points (6-9 FG), 10 rebounds and 2 assists, and Ursery had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists, helping UAA jump out to a 26-2 lead and hang on by an 80-74 score ... Jr. F Josiah Wood sparked the early run with 11 points (3-4 3FG) and 2 assists, and Jr. G Malik Clements came through with a critical 7 points (2-4 FG, 3-4 FT), 6 rebounds and 2 assists after missing the previous two contests.
TEAM NOTES: The Seawolves lead the GNAC and rank 16th in NCAA Div. II with their .798 free throw percentage ... UAA also has top-50 NCAA stats ranks in scoring defense (66.8) and rebound margin (+6.8), ranking 47th in both categories ... UAA posted its best shooting percentages of the season against Holy Names, at .469 on Friday and .500 on Saturday ... UAA is chasing its third straight 20-win season ... the Seawolves have 16 20-win seasons in 40 years of program history ... this year's team will be aiming for the program's 13th straight winning season and the 35th in 41 years ... the Seawolves have earned seven straight winning GNAC records and qualified to the GNAC Tournament every year since its founding in 2011.
LAMPKIN LIT: With four straight double-doubles, Sr. F Jacob Lampkin has already shown why he was a Preseason All-GNAC selection before even suiting up for the Seawolves ... a one-year transfer from Div. I University of the Pacific, Lampkin holds early GNAC ranks of 3rd in rebounding (10.8 rpg), 15th in scoring (14.4 ppg), 10th in FG% (.663) and 6th in FT% (.833) ... a starter in 39 of 83 career games at UOP, Lampkin was a high school teammate of former UAA All-American Suki Wiggs and is the nephew of former Major League Baseball player Tom Lampkin.
BE MORE PACIFIC: Along with Jacob Lampkin, fellow Pacific transfers Sr. PG Maleke Haynes and Sr. G D.J. Ursery comprise 60 percent of UAA's starting lineup this year ... Ursery has been UAA's second-leading scorer (13.0 ppg) and rebounder (4.8 rpg), while leading the team with five steals ... a 6.0 ppg scorer in 71 career contests with the Tigers, Ursery owns UAA's season-high scoring effort with 21 points in the loss to Chaminade ... Ursery also joined Lampkin as the only non-returning GNAC player to make the Preseason All-GNAC Team ... one of a trio of NCAA Basketball-playing siblings and a 52-game veteran in two years at Pacific, Haynes made a splash in Green & Gold by hitting the game-winning three-pointer with 2 seconds left in the season-opener at Antelope Valley ... boosted by 8 assists in the first victory over Holy Names, he is 6th in the GNAC with 4.4 apg, along with league ranks of 6th in A/T ratio (1.8) and 10th in FT% (.813).
2017-18 SEASON PREVIEW: The Seawolves have probably experienced more roster turnover than any team in NCAA Div. II this year, returning just one active player -- So. F Curtis Ryan – and no starters from its 2016-17 club ... UAA's other two veterans, Sr. G Drew Peterson and Jr. F Brian Pearson, are each coming off redshirt campaigns ... among the 12 newcomers on this year's roster, four are Div. I transfers -- Sr. F Jacob Lampkin, Sr. G Maleke Haynes and Sr. G D.J. Ursery all join UAA from the University of the Pacific, while Jr. G Malik Clements comes north from North Dakota State ... JC transfers Josiah Wood and Jack Macdonald should also play key roles, while three true freshmen will try to make an impact.
THE OSBORNE FILE: In his 14th year at the helm, head coach Rusty Osborne (253-140) has now led the Seawolves to 12 straight winning seasons, along with five NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the 2008 NCAA D-II Semifinals … the longest tenured coach in program history and currently with the second-longest tenure in the GNAC, he became the first UAA basketball coach to reach 200 career victories when the Seawolves beat Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 10, 2015 … Osborne captured his first career GNAC and NABC West District coach-of-the-year awards in 2008 after becoming the second coach to lead UAA to three consecutive NCAA berths (2006-08), and in 2011-12 his Seawolves posted a 24-10 record to equal the 2nd-most victories in program history; Osborne's 2007-08 club holds that record with a 29-6 mark … before taking over the head job in 2004-05, the Texas native previously served 13 seasons (1991-04) as a UAA assistant, including 11 years as the top assistant … the Seawolves have won over 60 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament ... Osborne is assisted Ryan Orton (4th season), former Seawolf guard Jesse Brown (2nd season) and volunteer assistant Daniel Vernon (1st season).
SEAWOLVES TABBED 4TH: UAA begins 2017-18 as a darkhorse candidate for the GNAC title, picked to finish fourth in the 11-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll, released Oct. 31.
