ANCHORAGE - Senior goaltender Olivier Mantha made 32 saves and freshman Jordan Xavier scored the equalizer with 1:15 remaining Friday to help the Alaska Anchorage hockey team to a 1-1 tie with 7th-ranked North Dakota in both teams' season opener at Sullivan Arena.
The opening frame was a battle with North Dakota out shooting Alaska Anchorage, 7-6, but neither team was able to put a goal on the board.
Johnny Simonson put the Fighting Hawks on the board with a goal at 10:44 of the second. UND finished with a 14-3 edge in shots in the period.
Freshman Jordan Xavier tied the game with his first career goal off a rebound with 75 seconds remaining in regulation. Tad Kozun and Austin Azurdia each recorded their first assists of the season on the goal.
The Seawolves controlled the overtime period thanks to a pair of Fighting Hawks power plays that gave UAA a five-on-three opportunity for 1:34 but was unable to score the game winner.
The game is offically listed as a tie, but the team's played a scoreless five minute period of three-on-three before Austin Poganski scored in the first round of the shootout for UND.
Olivier Mantha made a number of key saves and finished with 32 on the night. Mantha passed Doug Teskey (1996-99) for second in career minutes with 5253:56.
Cam Johnson finished with 15 saves for UND.
UND finished 0-5, and UAA was 0-3 on the power play.
