Seawolves ink D-I transfer Autummn Williams

ANCHORAGE – Still riding a positive wave from its NCAA Div. II Title Game appearance last month, the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball program has added another versatile talent to its 2016-17 roster as head coach Ryan McCarthy announced Thursday that Div. I transfer Autummn Williams has signed a scholarship agreement.

A 5-10 forward originally from Rochester, N.Y., Williams will have one season of eligibility with the Seawolves after suiting up last year at D-I program Little Rock, where she played in 11 contests for a 20-13 squad.

Prior to that, Williams played at junior-college powerhouse Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, helping the Cardinals to a combined 68-5 record in her two seasons. As a sophomore, she earned All-Region 14 and WBCA honorable mention All-America honors, averaging 12.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game for a TVCC club that finished third at the NJCAA Div. I National Tournament. As a freshman in 2012-13, she shot 44 percent from the floor and averaged 8.4 points and 3.1 rebounds, teaming with former Seawolf Dominique Brooks to help the Cardinals finish 36-1 and win the NJCAA national title.

“We are very excited Autummn has chosen to finish her career here at UAA,” said McCarthy, who has led the Seawolves to a 67-5 mark over the past two campaigns, including two Great Northwest Athletic Conference titles. “She was one of the best junior-college players in the country during her time at Trinity Valley and has won wherever she has been.”

Before signing at Little Rock, Williams was the No. 38-ranked JC recruit in the country according to ESPNW's Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.

“Autummn is an elite athlete who – at 5-10 – can cover a lot of ground and will be probably the best leaper I have coached at the guard position. She is a tenacious defender and can make plays at the rim that are unique to our level. I think Seawolf fans will really enjoy watching Autummn compete this next season.”

Williams played her final two prep seasons at Kennedale High School in Texas, where she racked up more than 500 rebounds, 500 steals, 300 assists and 125 blocks for the Lady Kats. As a senior, she led KHS to the Class 3A State title game and she was the District 1 Tournament MVP.

Williams joins fellow transfers Shelby Cloninger (5-11, F, Kamiah, Idaho/North Idaho), Kaitlyn Hurley (5-9, G, Roy, Utah/Snow College) and Zhara Laster (5-9, G, St. Mary's County, Md./Peninsula [Wash.] College), and Seattle prep star Kimijah King (5-7, G, Lakeside HS) as the fifth member of UAA's 2016 recruiting class.

The Seawolves lose seven seniors from this year's club that finished No. 2 in the NCAA Div. II national rankings and won an NCAA Div. II-record 38 games.
