Seniors spark Seawolves past SFU, 96-83

ANCHORAGE – Seniors Christian Leckband and Brian McGill came off the bench to combine for 38 points Thursday, pacing the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 96-83 victory over Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (12-4, 5-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 23 points and eight rebounds from junior guard Sekou 'Suki' Wiggs as they won for the sixth straight time and remained unbeaten in 14 all-time meetings against the NCAA's only Canadian school.

The Clan (1-10, 0-5) got a game-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting from guard Michael Harper as their losing skid reached nine games.

UAA never trailed despite playing even with the visitors for the first five minutes. Tied 8-8, Leckband took over with a personal 8-0 run, and McGill drained a three-pointer with 9:22 left to make it 28-18. The Seawolves would lead by double figures the rest of the way, including a 52-37 halftime advantage.

The lead stayed between 11 and 19 points the entire second half, with the exception of an 89-69 edge on Wiggs's basket at the 4:27 mark. The GNAC's leading scorer tallied 14 of his 23 points in the final  10:19 to keep alive his school-record streak of consecutive 20-plus efforts – now at 16 games in a row.

Meanwhile, Leckband topped 20 points for the second time in his career as the Nome native had 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting (2-4 3FG) and grabbed five rebounds in 25 minutes. McGill had 17 points (7-12 FG) and added team-highs of six assists and two steals, and junior wing Spencer Svejcar was efficient with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and four rebounds.

Along with six points from guard Drew Peterson, the Seawolf bench outscored their counterparts 46-14, while UAA also earned a huge edge at the free throw line, making 27 of 33 (.818) to SFU's 9 of 11 (.818).

Junior forward Corey Hammell just missed his ninth double-double with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds for UAA, which returns to the Alaska Airlines on Saturday for a showdown against Western Washington at 2:15 p.m.
