ANCHORAGE – More accolades for the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves keep rolling in as seniors Alfred Kangogo and Ruth Keino were recognized Thursday among the West Region's top scholar-athletes as they earned spots on the men's and women's Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country teams.
As all-district honorees, the Kenyan duo advance to the national ballot for a chance at Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades.
Kangogo, from Eldoret, Kenya, concluded his successful Seawolf campaign with an appearance at the NCAA indoor championships in March. Combined with his indoor debut, Kangogo, who holds a 3.37 GPA in nursing, posted nine NCAA appearances in track & field and cross country, while furnishing four All-America honors.
Also wrapping up her time in the Green & Gold, Keino (Kapcheno, Kenya) leaves UAA as the most decorated female runner to date. A nursing major with a 3.34 GPA, Keino furnished eight All-America awards throughout her time at UAA, while being named the 2011 Bill MacKay Athlete of the Year.
To be eligible for Capital One/CoSIDA All-Academic awards, a student-athlete must hold a minimum 3.20 overall GPA at his or her institution and hold at least sophomore academic status. The awards - the official academic All-America honors - are chosen by regional and national votes of sports information directors.
