Carlson hired as women's assistant

ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage women's basketball head coach Ryan McCarthy announced Tuesday that Alex Carlson has joined the program as the Seawolves' new assistant coach.

Carlson comes to UAA after four combined seasons at Pacific (Ore.) University, where he coached three years on the men's staff and one year on the women's side. At Pacific, he served as the Boxers' recruiting coordinator and was responsible for coaching the post players.

Carlson also spent two years as a Div. I student assistant at Boise State, where he also coached the Idaho Select AAU program. Prior to that, he was the head girls basketball coach for two seasons at his high school alma mater in Culver, Ore.

“We are very fortunate to add someone like Alex to our coaching staff,” said McCarthy, who led the Seawolves to a 17-10 record in his first year at the helm. “He has had a tremendous amount of success both as a former player and now a coach. Not only has winning been a common theme with him, but teams that he has coached have achieved at a high level in the classroom.  What really impresses me about Alex is his passion for basketball and his excitement about living in the great state of Alaska.  We are very excited to welcome Alex and his family to Seawolf Nation.”

Carlson played under legendary coach Dan Miles for four seasons at NAIA power Oregon Tech, where he earned honorable mention All-American and First Team All-Cascade Collegiate Conference honors after helping lead Oregon Tech to the 2003-04 NAIA Division II national championship, plus another Final Four appearance in 2005.

Carlson ranks No. 3 on the Oregon Tech all-time rebounds list and 10th in career points with 1,341. He received his bachelor's degree in marketing from Oregon Tech in 2005 and earned a second bachelor's degree in general education from Boise State in 2010.

He and his wife Courtney are the proud parents two young sons, Jakob and Michael.
