Keino takes 3rd in 10,000 at NCAAs

PUEBLO, Colo. – Highlighted by a third-place finish by Ruth Keino in the 10,000 meters, the Alaska Anchorage men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up Day 1 of the 2013 NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo., at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl on Thursday.

Combined, the Seawolves will send two athletes to the final events that will be contested on Friday and Saturday on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Capturing her seventh career All-America honor and second in the 10,000 meters was Keino, a senior from Kapcheno, Kenya, with a time of 36:17.26. Keino earned All-America honors in the 10K in 2011 with a career-best time of 34:40.53, before finishing runner-up in the 5,000 meters at the indoor championships in February.

Easily cruising to victory in Heat 1 of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and guaranteeing herself a spot in the final on Friday was junior All-American Susan Tanui. The runner-up last season in the event, Tanui posted a time of 10:50.98.

Tanui entered the meet with the second-fastest time of the season at 10:13.40 – a GNAC record – behind Adam State's Alicia Nelson, who owns a season-best time of 10:03.70. Nelson captured the win in Heat 2 with a time of 11:01.44.

Junior Ivy O'Guinn qualified for the finals in the 1500 meters with a prelim-time of 4:35.60. The Soldotna product will compete in the prelims of the 800 meters on Friday, before seeing the 1500 meter finals – and possibly the 800 meter finals – on Saturday.

After four events, Karolin Anders sits No. 9 among 17 competitors with 3,027 points. Anders is on paced to break her own school record of 5,034 – posted at the GNAC Multis Championships – with a 35 point improvement after Day 1.

A local of Berlin, Germany, Anders improved her personal best in the high jump by two inches with a UAA-record leap of 5-7.75, registered on her third attempt. The jump placed her second in the event with 879 points and ties for fifth all-time in the GNAC.

Anders registered a time of 15.37 in the 100-meter hurdles and 26.45 in the 200 meters, while posting a toss of 36-2.25 in the shot put.

In the decathlon, Cody Thomas, the GNAC champion in the event, is No. 11 at the halfway mark with 3,516 points. Thomas, from Blenheim, New Zealand, furnished a personal best of 37-2.25 in his final throw in the shot put, after tying his career high in the 100 meters at 10.92. The Kiwi also posted leaps of 19-5.5 in the long jump and 6-0.5 in the high jump and was clocked at 49.45 in the 400 meters.

Also competing in the 1500 meters and making his NCAA debut was sophomore Isaac Kangogo. A local of Eldoret, Kenya, Kangogo missed the finals by .10 of a second with a time of 4:01.16.

Junior Haleigh Lloyd also failed to qualify for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 11th at 1:01.44. Lloyd registered All-America honors in the same event a year ago with the seventh-place result.

Participating in his first NCAA track & field championship was sophomore Dylan Anthony. The Kodiak local finished with a time of 33:26.69.

Action continues tomorrow with the decathlon starting at 8 a.m. ADT and the heptathlon commencing at 9 a.m. ADT.
