UAA sets academic record number

ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage placed a program-best 15 student-athletes – eight men and seven women – to the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track & Field All-Academic team, announced by the league on Wednesday.

The Seawolves, which were among 112 student-athletes to receive the award, had two student-athletes to earn their fourth academic honor; Alfred Kangogo and Miriam Kipng'eno – both nursing majors.

The three-time award winners for UAA include Micah Chelimo on the men's side and Ruth Keino and Katie Krehlik on the women's side. Junior Haleigh Lloyd collected her second career academic honor.

Receiving the accolade for the first time were Nicholas Blackburn, Elliott Bauer, Austen DeWolf, Isaac Kangogo, Kevin Rooke and Travis Wilson for the men and Bryn Haebe, Valerie Massie and Christi Schmitz for the women.

Western Washington placed the most athletes on the academic team with 24, including 10 men and 14 women.  Northwest Nazarene earned 18 academic slots (7 men, 11 women), while Montana State Billings had 16 (5 men, 11 women).

UAA's previous best was 13, registered last season.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.  They must also qualify to compete in either the GNAC Indoor or Outdoor Track and Field championship meet
