UAA concludes weekend in California

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Alaska Anchorage men's and women's track & field teams concluded their Spring Break in California with three career highs, 13 season bests and nine top-10 showings at the Cal State Northridge Invitational on Saturday.

Improving upon her provisional NCAA qualifying time in the 800 meters was junior All-American Ivy O'Guinn . A local of Soldotna, O'Guinn registered a winning-time of two minutes, 12.15 seconds, dropping 57 seconds from last weekend. O'Guinn needs to hit 209.24 for automatic qualification.

Completing the podium takeover for the Seawolves in the 800 meters were junior Susan Bick (2:14.52) and freshman Jessica Pahkala (2:14.66) in second and third, respectively.

Furnishing a season-high-tying 800 meter time in the men's race was sophomore Isaac Kangogo. A local of Eldoret, Kenya, Kangogo finished runner-up with a time of 1:54.68 – the exact time he crossed at the Southern Birmingham Invite on March 9.

Other top-three finishes went to UAA's javelin duo of sophomore All-American Cody Parker and freshman Franz Burghagen. Parker posted a season-best toss of 220-10 – improving upon his NCAA automatic mark – for first, while Burghagen took second at 214-11.

Junior Haleigh Lloyd also earned a podium spot, finishing second in the women's 400-meter hurdles at 62.85.

Career bests for the Seawolves were registered by junior Sasha Halfyard (58.41) in the 400 meters, junior Gaynor Johansen (113-8) in the discus and junior Cody Gibson (158-5) in the javelin.

On Friday, the Seawolves' multi-eventers Cody Thomas, Karolin Anders and Lloyd each posted provisional point totals in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively. Thomas, from Blenheim, New Zealand, collected 6,781 points, while Anders (Berlin, Germany) recorded 4,756 and Llody furnished 4,637.

The Seawolves will have a weekend off before returning to California for the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State meet in the Bay Area on March 29-30.
