UAA heads to Stanford, San Francisco meets

THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s track & field teams head to Palo Alto and San Francisco, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational on April 6-7 and the San Francisco State Carnival on April 6.

WILLAMETTE INVITE RECAP: The Seawolves combined for seven first-place results, 17 podium finishes and 33 top-10 positions at the annual Willamette Invite on March 30-31 in Salem, Ore. ... the weekend was highlighted by sophomore Haleigh Lloyd, who set a GNAC record in the 400-meter hurdles (59.98), while breaking UAA records in the 100-meter hurdles (14.42) and 4x100-meter relay (48.04) ... also furnishing first-place showings were seniors Alfred Kangogo (3:53.61) in the 1500m and Dianne Chong (37-07.25) in the triple jump, junior Ethan Hewitt (48.58) in the 400m and sophomore Ivy O’Guinn (4:31.93) in the 1500m ... the women’s 4x400-meter relay  team won the event at 3:55.41, while the men’s 4x100-meter relay squad cruised to victory in 42.51.

SEAWOLF BITES: The Seawolves have registered one GNAC record this season, improved seven school records (5 women, 2 men) and posted 50 top-10 results in the all-time UAA record book (26 men, 24 women) ... UAA leads the GNAC in 18 events, including 16 of the 24 running events ... currently, UAA has 12 NCAA provisional times/marks, all ranking in the top 10 in Div. II.

ATHLETE NOTES: Sophomore Haleigh Lloyd became the first Seawolf this season to break a GNAC record, setting the 400-meter hurdle record at 59.98 – bypassing the previous record of 1:00.31, set by Western Washington’s Heidi Dimmitt in 2009 ... the time currently ranks her second in the nation ... Lloyd not only broke her own school record in the 400mH on March 31, but also in the 100-meter hurdles as well, registering a new time of 14.42 ... the Ladysmith, B.C. native was also a member of the 4x100-meter relay that set a school record at 48.05, .50 seconds faster than the previous record of 48.54 ... currently with the fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase in Div. II is sophomore Susan Tanui with a school-record time of 10:37.65, set March 16 – also the third-fastest in GNAC history ... Tanui, from Eldoret, Kenya, also ranks 9th in the 5,000 meters, good for 8th in the conference record book ... senior Hallidie Wilt joins Tanui in the steeplechase with a time of 10:42.9, good for 2nd in the nation and the fourth-fastest in GNAC history ... sophomore Ivy O’Guinn ranks 3rd in the 1500 meters (4:31.93) and 10th in the 5,000m (17:05.56) – the fifth-fastest 5K in UAA history and ninth-fastest in the GNAC ... also posting top-10 ranks in Div. II are seniors Ruth Keino (6th) and Kelsea Johnson (7th), in the 5K and heptathlon, respectively ... Johnson also broke her UAA record in the heptathlon with 4,838 points ... Grace Morgan is giving UAA some respectable numbers as a rookie ... a local of Salt Spring Island, B.C., Morgan has the second-fastest 200-meter time for UAA at 25.22 and the third-fastest 100-meter time at 12.49 ... senior Shoshana Keegan tops the GNAC performance list in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:05.87 ... on the men’s side, junior Micah Chelimo leads UAA with two NCAA provisional times ... a local of Kapkoi, Kenya, Chelimo is 2nd in both the 5K (14:08.91) and the steeplechase (8:56.37) ... Chelimo needs to drop .37 seconds for automatic qualification ... senior All-American Shaun Ward has the sixth-fastest 400-meter time at  52.74, while freshman Cody Parker has the fourth-best javelin toss in the nation and the UAA record at 211-01... Parker, from Comox, B.C., needs a toss of 213-4 for automatic qualification ... the GNAC record in the javelin is 223-2 by Josh Heidegger (2009) ... leading the GNAC in two events this season is senior Alfred Kangogo in the 800 and 1500 meters, while junior Ethan Hewitt leads the league in the 400 meters and freshman Dylan Anthony leads in the 10,000 meters ... Anthony’s time of 30:52.53 in the 10K is the fourth-fastest in UAA history.

GNAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Junior Micah Chelimo earned his third career GNAC Athlete of the Week honor for track & field after producing a NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on March 16 ... Chelimo, from Kapkoi, Kenya, won the men’s steeplechase with a time of 8 minutes, 56.37 seconds at the Occidental Distance Carnival (Eagle Rock, Calif.), just .37 seconds away from the automatic qualifying time ... Chelimo joins senior Hallidie Wilt and rookie Cody Parker, who each picked up weekly accolades on March 12.

UP NEXT: The Seawolves will head to Southern California for the second time of the season when they compete at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays (April 19-21), Azusa Pacific Invite (April 20) and the Long Beach State Invite (April 21).
