THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves commence a six-game homestand with a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against the No. 15 Denver Pioneers on Jan. 27-28 at the Sullivan Arena. The games are scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. AST both evenings.
THE SERIES – UAA vs. DU

NOTES: The series this weekend will mark the teams' only meetings against each other in the regular season … the teams met twice last season with DU picking up seven of the eight points … the Pioneers won on Dec. 10 (5-3) at the Sullivan Arena, before UAA and DU skated to a 2-2 tie on Dec. 11 … in Colorado, the Pioneers swept, 3-2, 5-1, on Jan. 21-22 ... UAA's last win against DU at home was on Nov. 7, 2009 (7-3) ... the Seawolves are looking for their first sweep of the Pioneers since Dec. 11-12, 1998 (5-1, 2-1).
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS: The Denver Pioneers travel to Alaska after sweeping the Bemidji State Beavers at home, 6-3, 3-2, on Jan. 13-14 ... DU is currently in a season-high three-game winning streak, with its last loss coming Jan. 6 against independent Alabama-Huntsville (3-2) ... the Pioneers are fifth in the WCHA with 19 points and are ranked No. 15 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine national polls ... DU is led offensively by junior F Drew Shore (15-20–35), sophomore F Jason Zucker (13-16–29) and freshman D Joey LaLeggia (9-15–24) ... splitting time between the crease has been junior G Adam Murray (.903 sv%, 3.21 gaa, 7-2-1) and freshman G Juho Olkinuora (.921 sv%, 2.24 gaa, 6-6-2), while G Sam Brittain could return to the lineup this weekend after missing 24 games with a knee injury.
LAST TIME vs. DENVER: The Seawolves were swept by then-No. 4 Denver on Jan. 21-22 in Colorado ... the Pioneers defeated the Seawolves 3-2 on Friday, and 5-1 on Saturday ... on Friday night, the Seawolves twice came from behind to tie the Pioneers, but DU added the game winner halfway through the third and managed to hold off UAA in the final minutes ... scoring for UAA was then-sophomore F Mitch Bruijsten and then-freshman F Brett Cameron ... on Saturday, the Seawolves struck first on a goal by then-sophomore F Chris Crowell and held the lead until the last four minutes of the first when DU scored three unanswered goals.

LAST TIME OUT: Last weekend, UAA was swept by the Wisconsin Badgers, 4-0, on Jan. 20, and 3-2 on Jan. 21 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. ... the Seawolves were handed their fourth shutout of the season on Friday, before dropping their fifth straight on Saturday ... scoring a power-play tally for UAA and getting the Seawolves on the board first was freshman D Austin Coldwell on Jan. 21 ... senior F/D Curtis Leinweber collected his team-high-tying seventh goal of the season to tie the game in the second, but the Badgers got the winning goal with under five minutes left in regulation for the WCHA sweep.
SEAWOLF BITES: The Seawolves, who play the next 8 of 10 WCHA games at home, are looking to break their current five-game losing skid, after dropping the last four following the holiday break – all on the road … the 4-0 loss against Wisconsin on Jan. 20 was UAA's fourth time being shut out this season ... the Seawolves have also been perfect on the penalty kill since the break, stopping all 16 attempts in the last four games ... after 22 games, UAA is being outshot by opponents, 626-593, but winning the battle of the shots in the third period (204-180) and in overtime (8-5) … UAA has posted 16 goals in the first period, 23 in the second, 14 in the third and one in OT for a combined 54 goals … the Seawolves have allowed 82 goals ... for special teams, UAA has posted 17 power-play goals to opponents' 20, and two shorthanded strikes to opponents' five.
FIRST HALF RECAP: UAA wrapped up the first half of the season with an overall record of 6-10-2 (.388) – the highest winning percentage after 18 games since 2008-09 and fourth-best under bench boss Dave Shyiak … UAA was 3-10-1 (.250) in league play after 14 games, tying the 2007-08 and 2005-06 seasons ... the Seawolves started the season undefeated in conference play, going 3-0-1, before dropping the next six league games … UAA got its first WCHA win on Nov. 18 against No. 15 Michigan Tech at the Sullivan Arena, 3-1 … on Dec. 9, the Seawolves picked up their first win against a nationally top-10 ranked team, defeating Colorado College, 6-3 … UAA is 3-6-0 against ranked opponents this season … the Seawolves have played in three extra-minute games with a 1-0-2 record … the Seawolves have shut out one opponent this season, defeating Nebraska Omaha on Oct. 15, 3-0 in non-conference action ... UAA posted a season-high 17 points against Mercyhurst (Oct. 15); six goals against Mercyhurst and Colorado College (Dec. 9); 11 assists and 44 shots on goal against Mercyhurst; 41 saves, 13 penalties and 45 penalty minutes against Minnesota State (Nov. 26) ... UAA completed the month of October with a 3-4-1 record, followed by a 2-3-1 record in November and a 1-3-0 record in December ... UAA's Brice Alaska Goal Rush title was its first since the inaugural event in 2008 and marked the first time in four years that the Seawolves have swept both of their preseason tourneys (BAGR and Kendall Hockey Classic).
PLAYER NOTES: Individually, senior F/D Curtis Leinweber posted a team-high and career-high-tying 12 points with a goal on Jan. 21 against Wisconsin … Leinweber's seventh goal of the season ties him with junior F Mitch Bruijsten for the team to lead the Seawolves … Leinweber, who has posted all 12 points in the last 10 games, saw his four-game point streak broken on Jan. 20 with the shutout by the Badgers ... also scoring for UAA against Wisconsin was freshman D Austin Coldwell … Coldwell collected his second career goal - both on the power play … Coldwell's seven points trails only F Eric Scheid's eight points for the UAA freshman class, while he leads the rookie class for defensemen ... furnishing assists for UAA on Jan. 21 was junior D Scott Warner, sophomore F Matt Bailey and sophomore D Quinn Sproule … Warner leads fulltime UAA defensemen with nine points ... to date, just two Seawolves have suited up in all 22 games this season – Warner and sophomore D Quinn Sproule … after sophomore F Andrew Pickering suited up on Dec. 9 against CC, all 27 Seawolves have now played in one or more games this season, while 25 of 27 have posted at least one point.
