TURLOCK, Calif. – Alaska Anchorage sophomore Micah Chelimo earned his second career All-America honor in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while freshman Susan Bick set a Seawolf record in the prelims of the 800 meters on Day 2 of the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.
A native of Kapkoi, Kenya, Chelimo recorded a time of 8 minutes, 56.74 seconds for his second consecutive All-America accolade in the steeplechase. Chelimo finished sixth, after finishing seventh in the event last season, and joins David Kiplagat as the only two Seawolves with two All-America honors in the steeplechase.
Bick, a from Anchorage's Bartlett High School, crossed the finish line at 2:10.69, besting her own UAA record of 2:10.87. Making her NCAA debut, Bick recorded the third-fastest time in the prelim to qualify for the finals on Saturday.
Competing in the prelims with Bick was classmate Ivy O'Guinn (Soldotna) – the only freshmen to qualify for nationals in the women's 800 meters. O'Guinn, who will compete in the finals of the 1500 meters on Saturday, finished 16th with a time of 2:14.50.
After seven events scored, the UAA men's team is tied for No. 12 with eight points, while the women's team is tied for No. 34 with one point.
UAA returns to the track on Saturday, May 28 for the final day of competition. Contending in the final events will be junior Miriam Kipng'eno and O'Guinn in the 1500 meters at 5:05 p.m. ADT, junior Alfred Kangogo in the 1500 meters at 5:15 p.m., Bick in the 800 meters at 6:25 p.m., and sophomore Ruth Keino and Kipng'eno in the 5,000 meters at 7:35 p.m.
