NCAA Championships await 9 UAA qualifiers

THIS WEEK: Nine Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will head to Turlock, Calif., on May 26-28 to compete at the 2011 NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

NOTES: UAA will suit up four men and five women for the second straight season ... in 2009, the Seawolves qualified a program-best 10 athletes ... three Seawolves — Ruth Keino, Miriam Kipng'eno and Ivy O'Guinn —  will compete in two events ... returning to the NCAA circuit after redshirting last season is senior David Registe in the long jump ... Registe, a local of Palmer (Colony HS), tops the field with a leap of 25' 10¾, leading his nearest competitor by over four inches ... the 2008 NCAA long jump champion, Registe finished runner-up in 2009 at the national meet before redshirting the 2010 season with an injury.

HISTORY OF UAA AT THE NCAAs: UAA athletes have earned 16 All-American honors overall, including a program-best five accolades in 2010 and 2009 … the best individual result was by then-sophomore David Registe who brought home UAA's first NCAA Championship title in '08 (long jump) … on the women's side, Mary Pearce owns the Seawolves' top position, fourth, in the 400 meters (2007) … the men's team posted a program-best 14th-place finish during both the 2010 and 2009 seasons … prior to those seasons, the best team result by a Seawolf squad at NCAAs was tied for 19th by the men in 2008 and 33rd in 2006 by the women … then-sophomore Marko Cheseto became the only Seawolf to garner two All-America honors in the same season in 2009 and repeated the same feat in 2010, while David Kiplagat, Registe and Pearce each hold two career All-America awards. AT THE 2010 NCAAS: The Seawolves qualified nine athletes (5 women, 4 men) for the NCAA Div. II Track & Field Championships in just the sixth year of the program … the UAA men's team, which finished 14th with 17 points, captured four All-Americans in juniors Demietrius Preston and Marko Cheseto, Alfred Kangogo and Micah Chelimo … Preston (Anchorage) recorded UAA's best finish of the meet, finishing second in the long jump with a personal best of 25-3.25 … for the second time of his career, Cheseto (Kapenguria, Kenya) earned two All-America accolades, finishing sixth in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters — the only Seawolf to record two All-America honors in the same season … Kangogo (Eldoret, Kenya) registered his first All-America award with an eighth-place showing in the 1,500 meters, while Chelimo (Kapkoi, Kenya) raced to seventh place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase … on the women's side, senior Elisha Harris (West Jordan, Utah) and Ruth Keino (Kapcheno, Kenya) both produced a team-best 11th-place finish in their respective events … Harris recorded a toss of 134-9 in the javelin, while Keino registered a UAA-record time of 16:44.24 in the 5,000 meters … also representing UAA at the NCAAs was senior Laura Carr (10K), junior Hallidie Wilt (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Miriam Kipng'eno (1500m, 5K).

AT GNAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Senior David Registe was named the Most Outstanding Male Performer at the conclusion of the 2011 GNAC Track & Field Outdoor Championships, after posting a meet-record five titles on May 13-14 — marking the second straight season that UAA has received the  Most Outstanding Male Performer award ... Registe becmae the first GNAC athlete to win five titles, after posting a win in the long jump, 100m, 200m, 4x100mR and 4x400mR ... overall the Seawolves tied a program-best with nine titles, plus13 all-conference certificates and one school record over the two-day haul ... the men's team finished the meet in fourth place with 103 points, while the women's team was sixth with 86 points ... in addition to Registe, sophomore Micah Chelimo claimed two titles (3,000-meter steeplechase, 5K) ... setting the lone UAA record of the meet was the women's 4x100-meter relay team ... the foursome of juniors Dianne Chong and Kelsea Johnson and freshmen Sasha Halfyard and Haleigh Lloyd recorded a new time of 48.54, bypassing the previous record of 48.75 set in this year's season-opener Mar. 5. ALL-REGION HONORS: Thirteen Seawolves were among a total 1,250 athletes that were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) inaugural outdoor track & field Div. II All-Region Team on May 17 ... leading the UAA men's squad was senior David Registe with four honors ... claiming two awards were juniors Alfred Kangogo and Shaun Ward and sophomores Micah Chelimo and Ethan Hewitt. Senior Levi Sutton and freshman Gabe Holland earned one accolade ... on the women's side, junior Miriam Kipng'eno, sophomore Ruth Keino and freshman
Ivy O'Guinn each picked up two honors, while seniors Emma Bohman and Ardrienna Everett and freshman Haleigh Lloyd chipped in with one honor apiece.

SENIOR SEND OFF: Competing in their final meet at the GNAC Championships were seniors Levi Sutton (Kenai), Emma Bohman (Palmer), Ardrienna Everett (Palmer) and Alex West (Soldotna) ... senior David Registe will make his final collegiate appearance at the NCAAs this weekend.

USTFCCCA RANKINGS: The UAA men's track & field team is ranked 16th in the latest U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Div. II national poll for the second consecutive week ... polls are released each Tuesday ... see complete poll on page 5.

GNAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
Junior Alfred Kangogo was named the GNAC's Athlete of the Week on May 9 ... Kangogo, from Eldoret, Kenya, broke the league record in the 1500 meters when he was clocked at three minutes, 44.67 seconds – more than 2½ second faster than the previous record of 3:47.21, held by Western Washington's Anthony Tomsich ... the time currently places him third among Division II competitors ... Kangogo joined teammates Ethan Hewitt and Ruth Keino, who were honored April 18, senior David Registe (Apr. 4, Mar. 7), junior Miriam Kipng'eno (Mar. 28), and freshmen
Ivy O'Guinn (Mar. 14) and Haleigh Lloyd (Mar. 7), as GNAC Athletes of the Week this year.

BROKEN RECORDS:
The men's and women's teams have combined for 17 school records this season (9 women, 8 men), including two by freshman Haleigh Lloyd – in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.96) at Northridge and the 100-meter hurdles record at 14.54 at the Willamette Invite ... also setting new UAA records this season are juniors Miriam Kipng'eno in the 5K (16:36.66) at the Stanford Invite and Kelsea Johnson in the heptathlon with 4,491 points at the Sheila Tarr-Smith Multi Events on March 9-10, sophomore Ruth Keino in the 10K (34:57.41) at the Mt. SAC Relays, and freshmen Susan Bick in the 800 meters (2:10.87) at the Stanford Invite (March 25) and
Ivy O'Guinn in the 1500 meters (4:31.85) at the Oxy Invite (May 7) ... both the women's relays have set new records – the foursome of junior Dianne Chong, Johnson, freshman Sasha Halfyard and Lloyd broke the 4x100-meter relay with a new time of 48.54 at the GNAC championships, while Bick, O'Guinn, senior Ardrienna Everett and Lloyd posted a time of 3:50.28 for a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay on May 7 ... on the men's side, senior David Registe bypassed both of his school records in the 100 meters (10.68) and the 200 meters (21.44), while junior Alfred Kangogo set the UAA and GNAC record in the 1500 on May 7 with a time of 3:44.67 ... freshman Gabe Holland (162-0) has the discus record and hammer record, sophomore Ethan Hewitt (47.51) has the 400 meters record, and junior Wyatt Morgan has the decathlon record ...  the men's 4x400-meter relay of Hewitt, senior Levi Sutton, Registe and junior Shaun Ward set the record at 3:14.74 on April 16.
