Statement regarding death of William Ritekwiang

STATEMENT FROM UAA ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DR. STEVE COBB
REGARDING DEATH OF STUDENT-ATHLETE WILLIAM RITEKWIANG

“We are deeply saddened to report the death of William Ritekwiang . William, a sophomore from Kapenguria, Kenya, was found this morning (Saturday) in his home. All of Seawolf Nation sends our thoughts and our prayers to his family, friends, teammates and coaches.

“William was an excellent student who made the 2010 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association's Academic All-America team, and he excelled as an athlete in his time as a track & field and cross country runner at UAA. Last fall he earned all-region honors as the Seawolves captured the West Region team title, and he was the fourth Seawolf across the line at the NCAA Championships, where UAA placed eighth as a team.

“We are devastated by the loss of one of our outstanding student-athletes. Counselors have been made available to students and staff. We respectfully request that the privacy of our students and Seawolf athletic employees be respected as we grieve William's passing.”
