#13 Seawolves contain Cowgirls, 81-43

ANCHORAGE – Tanee' Denson-Griffin scored 16 points and Nikki Aden added 15 points Saturday to lift the 13th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 81-43 victory over New Mexico Highlands at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (4-1) also got 12 points and three steals from junior center Hanna Johansson as they forced 31 turnovers for the second straight night against the visitors from Las Vegas, N.M.

The Cowgirls (2-2), of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, were led by 11 points from point guard Whitley Coca.

Just as in Friday's 73-39 UAA win, NMHU hung close for the opening minutes. But with 5:45 on the clock, junior forward Tijera Matthews scored a putback layup to start a 13-0 run that opened a 34-12 lead for UAA, which has now won 67 of its last 70 home games under head coach Tim Moser.

UAA took a 36-16 lead into halftime and nailed 5 of 8 three-pointers in the second half to extend its lead as high as 79-38 with two minutes remaining.

The Seawolves snagged a season-best 18 steals, getting three apiece from Denson-Griffin, Johansson, Alysa Horn and Sarah Herrin. Senior point guard Kaitlin McBride had nine points and equaled her career-high with five assists, while committing just one turnover.

Aden, a 5-8 senior wing, shot 6 of 10 from the field and tallied two assists and two steals in just 19 minutes of action. Horn, a 6-0 sophomore forward, led UAA with eight rebounds.

Denson-Griffin, a 5-9 junior transfer from San Bernardino Valley College, nailed 2 of 4 three-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and dished three assists in her best all-around game as a Seawolf thus far.

Twelve Seawolves found the scoring column, including the first career points for freshmen Caitlin Nelson (4 pts, 2-2 FG), Brittany Neeley (3 pts, 1-1 3FG) and Kajsa Lundahl (2 pts, 2-2 FT).

UAA doesn't get much time to rest before beginning defense of its four straight Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout titles when it faces San Jose State on Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena. The Seawolves and the Division I Spartans tip off at 6 p.m. AST.
