Seawolves open with Hawaii Pacific Invite

MEET PREVIEW: The Seawolves will commence the 2010 slate with the Hawaii Pacific Invite on Sept. 4 at Sand Island Beach Park in Honolulu ... the races will start at 9:30 a.m. ADT.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW:
The Seawolves return 10 of their key runners from a year ago, including five All-Americans ... the women will strive to defend their West Region and Great Northwest Athletic Conference titles with the return of two All-Americans – sophomore Miriam Kipng'eno and junior Ruth Keino ... the Kenyan duo will team with seniors Hallidie Wilt (Unalaska) and Emma Bohman (Palmer) and junior Shoshana Keegan (Anchorage) – all returning NCAA participants – as they aim for a top-3 team finish at Nationals ... the men's squad has the potential for the best NCAA finish to date with the return of the 2009 West Region and GNAC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Year honoree, senior Marko Cheseto ... a 2008 All-American, Cheseto will be joined by sophomores Micah Chelimo (Kapkoi, Kenya) and Jake Parisien (Palmer), who have each garnered an All-America awards in their careers ... the Seawolves also return NCAA participants in senior Paul Rottich (Kapsabet, Kenya), junior Michael Adams (Anchorage) and sophomore Thomas Hill (Thunder Bay, Ontario).

USTFCCCA POLL:
The women's team received a No. 3 ranking in the preseason national poll released Aug. 25 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) ... the UAA men's team also made the top-25 Div. II rankings at No. 16 ... the next ranking will be on Sept. 21 ... see complete poll on page 3 of weekly release.

2009 SEASON REVIEW: The Seawolf women finished the 2009 slate undefeated during the regular season before posting a program-best 5th-place finish at the NCAA Championships … the Seawolves also recorded their first-ever GNAC and West Region titles ... at the end of the season, UAA recorded a program-best No. 3 ranking in Div. II … the men's squad earned their sixth trip to the NCAAs, finishing 17th overall … UAA finished runner-up in the GNAC for the fourth time, while registering a third-place finish at West Regionals … junior Marko Cheseto paced all Seawolves with a team-high three individual victories.

AWARDS, ACCOLADES & PLETHORA OF HONORS: Three Seawolves  — Micah Chelimo, Ruth Keino and
Miriam Kipng'eno — earned All-America honors by virtue of their performances at the NCAA Championships … following the GNAC Championships on Oct. 24, UAA's Marko Cheseto was selected as the GNAC's Male Cross Country Runner of the Year, while Chelimo and Kipng'eno brought home respective Freshman of the Year honors … head coach Michael Friess was honored as the women's GNAC Coach of the Year and the women's West Region Coach of the Year (1st ever) … the GNAC honor for Friess is his seventh conference accolade and eighth overall (one  acquired in the Pac West Conference) … Cheseto was also selected as the men's West Region Athlete of the Year— the first-ever region award for a UAA runner … in addition to the athletic awards, seven Seawolves were selected to the GNAC All-Academic Team (see full list on page 2) … overall, the Seawolves produced eight runners on both the All-Conference and All-Region teams.

2009 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Seawolf women were led to a program-best 5th-place finish at the NCAAs by
Miriam Kipng'eno in Evansville, Ind. … Kipngeno received All-America honors after recording the best NCAA finish by a UAA woman (14th) … Ruth Keino completed her second appearance at the NCAAs in 39th place while Hallidie Wilt was 45th, Shoshana Keegan was 53rd and senior Laura Carr was 63rd … on the men's side, Micah Chelimo (40th) led UAA to 17th place overall … Marko Cheseto was 42nd, followed by Alfred Kangogo (94th), Michael Adams (143rd) and Will Estes (174th).

2009 WEST REGIONAL: The men's and women's teams earned their second consecutive trips to the NCAAs after the women won UAA's first-ever West Region title and the men's team finished third Nov. 7 in San Francisco … on the women's side, the Seawolves placed all five runners in the top 15 for a program-best 35 points on the Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadow course … prior to the meet, the highest placing for UAA's women was third — accomplished on three occasions (2008, 2005, 2004), while the men's best finish was second, registered in 2008 … paced by Unalaska native Hallidie Wilt in third place with a time of 21 minutes, 11.5 seconds, all five Seawolf scorers finished within 35 seconds of each other for the title and All-West Region honors … Ruth Keino (4th, 21:11.8) and Miriam
Miriam Kipng'eno (5th, 21:17.9) rounded out the top 5, while senior Laura Carr (21:30.3) and Shoshana Keegan (21:45.7) placed 9th and 14th, respectively, in the 6K race … Carr became the first Seawolf woman to post three All-West Region honors (2009, 2008, and 2006) … on the men's side, Marko Cheseto (Kapenguria, Kenya) raced to an individual title in a time of 30:42 seconds in the 10K race after finishing runner-up in 2008 ... Cheseto led the Seawolves – who entered the meet ranked 4th regionally and 22nd nationally – to third place with 96 points, earning the region's final NCAA berth on the men's side … Micah Chelimo and Alfred Kangogo each finished in the top 15 to claim All-West Region honors … Chelimo completed the race in third place in a time of 31:05, while Kangogo was 10th, crossing the line at 31:35 … rounding out the UAA scorers were Paul Rottich (37th, 33:04), and Michael Adams (47th, 33:32.7).

SEAWOLF WOMEN, CHESETO WIN GNAC TITLES:
UAA won its first-ever women's conference team title, while the UAA men finished runner-up at the 2009 GNAC Championships, Oct. 24 in Yakima, Wash. … Marko Cheseto repeated as the GNAC's male individual winner, leading the Seawolves to second place — their fourth runner-up finish since joining the conference in 2001 … on the women's side, the Seawolves placed five runners in the top seven, led by Miriam
Miriam Kipng'eno (22:02) in third …  UAA won the team title with 25 points, the second-lowest team score in GNAC history … joining Kipng'eno and earning all-conference honors was Shoshana Keegan (4th, 22:06), Ruth Keino (5th, 22:12), Hallidie Wilt (6th, 22:16) and senior Laura Carr (7th, 22:18) … Carr became the third Seawolf to finish in the top 10 and earn all-conference honors in four different seasons — 2009, 2008, 2006 and 2005 … on the men's side, Cheseto was clocked at 24:50 to lead UAA to 70 points … picking up men's all-conference honors as well were Alfred Kangogo (4th, 25:12) and Micah Chelimo (5th, 25:13), while UAA got scoring from Michael Adams in 31st (27:21) and Thomas Hill in 39th (27:38).
