UAA embarks on California road trip

THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will head to California for the Occidental Distance Carnival in Eagle Rock on March 12, before competing in the Northridge Relays on March 13.

INJURY REPORT: Due to an injury, David Registe, a two-time All-American and the 2008 NCAA Div. II Long Jump champion, will redshirt this season ... junior All-American Shaun Ward is also listed as injured and is still awaiting more diagnosis.

LAST TIME OUT: Rookie Ethan Hewitt started his collegiate career with a GNAC record in the season opener at the UNLV Track & Field Classic on March 6 ... Hewitt, a Eagle River native and Chugiak high school graduate, won the men's 400 meter race with a GNAC record-breaking time of 47.97 seconds ... the mark also qualifies the freshman provisionally for the NCAA Championships (May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C.), and earned him the GNAC Runner of the Week award ... in addition to Hewitt, five other Seawolves posted provisional qualifying marks; junior Marko Cheseto, sophomore Alfred Kangogo (two), freshman Micah Chelimo on the men's team and junior Hallidie Wilt and sophomore Miriam Kipngeno ... Wilt broke the UAA record in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:10.43.

UP NEXT: The Seawolves will have the next weekend off before heading to San Francisco for the Stanford Invitational and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on March 26-27.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW: The 2010 edition of the Seawolves returns 26 athletes (14 women, 12 men) from last season, while adding 15 newcomers (4 women, 11 men) to the list ... the Seawolves also return five NCAA qualifiers from 2009, including two-time All-American junior Marko Chesteo ... sophomore Alfred Kangogo and juniors Demietrius Preston and Shaun Ward will also be back in the lineup for the men's team ... UAA also returns senior James McLaughlin, who posted the fastest 400m time in the conference ... after sitting out the 2009 track & field season, cross country All-American Jake Parisien will suit back up for the Green & Gold ... on the women's side, UAA only graduated two seniors and returns senior Laura Carr for her final season as a Seawolf ... the women's distance squad will be a force to be reckoned with after registering its first GNAC and West Region titles in cross country.

LAST SEASON AT THE NORTHRIDGE INVITE: The UAA track and field team posted 20 personal career-bests and 15 top-10 finishes at the Northridge Invitational on March 14 ... the Seawolves performances were highlighted by freshman Cory Pena and senior James Pettigrew qualifying provisionally for the NCAAs in the 800 meters ... Pena placed in second in the event with a time of 1:52.65, bypassing the provisional mark of 1:53.00 ... Pettigrew was clocked at one minute, 52.86 seconds for a third-place finish ... both Seawolves need to run a time of 1:50.00 or faster for the automatic qualification ... improving upon his 1500 meter time was Marko Cheseto ... he bested a career-high 3:53.02 time by about a second and a half with a new time of 3:51.52 for second place ... he needs to run a 3:47.00 or faster in order to run the 1500 at Nationals ... Cheseto already qualified in the 5000m ... also posting top-10 finishes and career-bests in the 1500 was senior David Kiplagat (4th, 3:53.41), Alfred Kangogo (5th, 3:53.97), senior Mick Boyle (6th, 3:54.13) and senior Auston Ellis (28th, 4:11.09) ... Shaun Ward set a PR in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.60 for fourth and Thomas Hill (1:55.42) recorded his fastest time in the 800 for sixth ... on the women's side, the Seawolves top-finish was recorded by freshman Stephanie Trenholm in the 800m ... she posted a 6th place performance in a time of 2:16.08 for her career-best.

LAST SEASON AT THE OCCIDENTAL DISTANCE CARNIVAL: The UAA distance squad posted 14 top-10 finishes in the 2009 Occidental Distance Carnival ... qualifying automatically for Nationals was = Marko Cheseto, while three Seawolves qualified provisionally for the NCAAs- senior David Kiplagat, freshman Cory Pena and junior Elizabeth Chepkosgei ... Kiplagat posted a provisional qualifying time of 9:21.93 for the fastest time in the 3000m steeplechase ... Pena broke the four-minute mark with a time of 3:51.87 in the 1500 for his first collegiate victory-provisional time- after dropping just under 30 seconds from his first meet in Las Vegas ... senior James Pettigrew snagged the 800 meter run with a career-high time of one minute, 53.23 seconds ... on the women's side, Chepkosgei qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships on May 21-23 in San Angelo, Texas, when she clocked a career-high time of 17:17.78 for a third place finish in the 5000 meters.
