Gymnasts improve at Metroplex Challenge

DALLAS – Junior Leah Wilson posted a 37.075 all-around and Texans Courtney Williams and Kelsey Fullerton produced solid nights on three events to lift the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team to a season-high 188.900 score at the Metroplex Challenge quad meet Saturday night at the Dallas Convention Center.

Despite finishing fourth behind 2nd-ranked Oklahoma (196.100), North Carolina State (194.875) and Division II power Texas Woman's (191.225), the Seawolves improved by more than three and a half points over their previous season-best score.

Wilson finished third place in the all-around as UAA produced its best night of the year on three of four events – vault (47.925), bars (47.900, 12th-best in program history) and beam (46.675).

Williams, a native of Corpus Christi, had UAA's top score on bars (9.65), tied with Wilson on vault (9.65) and earned the third-best Seawolf mark on beam (9.3). Fullerton, a sophomore from nearby Flower Mound, tallied a 9.575 on vault and team-bests of 9.65 on floor and 9.6 on beam.

Sophomore Shakea Sanders scored a 9.55 and senior Meagan Byrne had a 9.2 on bars for their respective career-high scores.

The Seawolves now get 12 days off between meets before traveling to California on Feb. 12 to face Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival UC Davis.
