ANCHORAGE - Junior Nikki Aden led a trio of career-high performances with 18 points Sunday as the nationally 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team recovered with a 92-57 victory over Western State at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
UAA (9-1) also got a career-high-tying 17 points from senior guard Tamar Gruwell and 16 points from Sarah Herrin as it avenged last night's 36-35 upset at the hands of the Mountaineers.
Western State (4-7) was led by a game-high 21 points from Amber Murray, but the point guard committed 10 of her team's 28 turnovers.
After allowing the first bucket of the game, UAA responded with five straight points from Aden to claim the lead for the rest of the night. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference club stayed within 23-19 at the 6:33 mark, but Gruwell sparked a 7-0 run with a three-pointer and the Seawolves stretched to a 40-25 halftime lead.
UAA would leave no doubt, beginning with a 20-2 run in the opening seven minutes of the second half and eventually pushing its lead as high as 83-39.
The Seawolves outshot the visitors from Gunnison, Colo., 50 percent to 36 percent, boosted by hot performances from Gruwell (6-9 FG, 5-8 3FG), Herrin (6-10 FG, 2-5 3FG), Hanna Johansson (9 pts, 3-4 FG, 3-3 FT) and Nicci Miller (13 pts, 4-7 FG, 4-6 FT).
Aden also had three assists and no turnovers as she surpassed her previous high of 16 points. Herrin - a junior transfer from Alaska Fairbanks - had her top scoring game as a Seawolf, while Gruwell equaled her career-high set last year against Seattle Pacific in UAA's West Regional finals victory. Gruwell also had a pair of assists, no turnovers and three steals in 30 minutes.
The Seawolves are now off for nine days before traveling to Honolulu to take on Chaminade in an important Division II West Region contest on Dec. 30.
