Nanooks shut down Lakers in Kendall

ANCHORAGE - Dion Knelsen and Andy Taranto tallied three points apiece and Alaska Fairbanks used a four-goal outburst in the second period to earn a 5-1 victory over Mercyhurst in the Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena on Saturday.

The Nanooks (2-0-0) also got 20 saves from goaltender tourney Most Outstanding Player Scott Greenham to clinch a repeat of their 2008 Kendall title.

The Lakers (0-2-0), of Erie, Pa., got their lone goal from Derek Elliott in the third period, but that only cut the score to 4-1 following UAF's big second stanza.

Mercyhurst provided the opportunity for the Nanooks when Scott Pitt took a 5-minute major boarding penalty. UAF struck just 20 seconds later on Taranto's first goal of the year, getting assists from Knelsen and Dustin Sather. Taranto then earned an assist on Cody Butcher's second tally of the power play a couple minutes later.

After an even-strength goal by Knelsen made it 3-0, the Nanooks delivered a crushing blow, scoring off a faceoff with 1.4 ticks on the clock. Sophomore winger Ron Meyers was credited with the goal.

The Nanooks outshot the Lakers 31-21.
