Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational - Match 2
ANCHORAGE - Outside hitters Dan Yang and Jelena Jakovljevic combined for 30 kills as the Academy of Art overcame an early deficit to earn a 20-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-12 victory over the University of Mary in the second match of the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Friday.
AAU (1-0) got a 16-kill, 11-dig double-double from Yang, while setter Melissa Cheng came through with 36 assists, 14 digs and impressive .600 hitting (6 kills-0 errors-10 attacks). The Urban Knights, from San Francisco, also received seven kills and seven total blocks from middle hitter Amy Bush.
Mary (0-1) had a balanced attack, with four players notching at least seven kills, but the Bismarck, N.D., squad was out-hit .267 to .164. Lauren Wells led the Marauders with 11 kills, while libero Kendra Hobbs had 13 digs.
Mary must rebound quickly with a 5 p.m. ADT match coming up against Kentucky Wesleyan, which lost in three sets earlier to host Alaska Anchorage.
Meanwhile, the Urban Knights return to the court for a 7 p.m. match against the Seawolves.
Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational - Match 3
ANCHORAGE - Junior outside hitter Amanda Hennessy notched six kills and had seven digs Friday as the University of Mary used a solid defensive effort to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan, 25-22, 25-14, 25-15, in the third match of the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational.
The Marauders (1-1) bounced back from an earlier loss to Academy of Art thanks to a 46-34 advantage in digs and an 8-3 edge in blocks against KWC.
The Panthers (0-2) were led by seven kills and four digs from outside hitter Emily Harpenau.
Both teams return to action with two more matches Saturday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
