ANCHORAGE ? Spirited efforts on balance beam and floor exercise were not enough Friday as the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team made its 2008 home debut with a 191.275-187.300 loss to league rival UC Davis at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Freshman Stacey Nicolini of UCD won top all-around honors with a 38.100 score, while teammate Michelle Kulovitz registered a 37.925.

Seawolf senior Jessica Portlock ? competing her first all-around since 2006 ? registered a 37.350 for third place, including a solid 9.5 beam routine and a 9.475 vault.

UCD (4-2) jumped ahead early with extremely sharp performances on vault (48.725) and bars (48.450), getting seven scores of 9.7 or higher on those events. UCD's Lida Gehlen and Nicolini earned the highest scores of the night with 9.85s on bars and vault, respectively.

After falling in a 3-point hole after two rotations, the Seawolves (0-3) kept things respectable with a 47.175 on beam and a 46.425 on floor. Freshman Kelsey Fullerton ended the meet with a 9.625 on floor and registered a 9.45 on vault, while fellow rookie Maria Puricelli had a team-best 9.725 on bars.

Junior Brooke Nall earned a career-high score on balance beam for the second straight meet with a 9.6, and sophomore Meagan Byrne posted career-highs on both beam (9.525) and floor (9.15). Sophomore Micki Cole established a new personal-best on floor as well with a 9.3.

The Seawolves and Aggies, both members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, meet again Sunday at 2 p.m. at the WFSC.
