ANCHORAGE - The University of Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team added a multi-dimensional guard to its 2009-10 lineup Wednesday as head coach Tim Moser announced the signing of Jessica Dela Cruz to a National Letter of Intent.
A 5-8 guard, Dela Cruz averaged 13.1 points, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game for San Joaquin Delta College as a sophomore in 2008-09, leading the Mustangs to a 27-6 record and a runner-up finish at the California JC State tournament. The Big 8 Conference MVP and First Team All-State honoree also shot 42 percent from three-point range.
“Jessica has a great basketball IQ and will fit right into what we need in our program,” said Moser, who has coached the Seawolves to consecutive NCAA Div. II Final Four appearances. “She is a proven winner who will provide intelligence and skill to our team. She loves basketball and that will be contagious for her teammates. We are excited to have her join our Seawolf family.”
As a prep, Dela Cruz was a 4-year letterwinner at Galt High School, where she helped her team to a San Joaquin Valley Conference title as a junior. As a senior, she averaged 16.9 points and 4.7 steals, and was named to the prestigious Sacramento Optimist all-star team.
Dela Cruz becomes the second Seawolf in the 2009-10 recruiting class, joining early signee Alex Coon (5-10, F), an incoming freshman from Wasilla (Colony HS).
