Nine Seawolves hit provisional marks

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - Nine Alaska Anchorage Seawolves qualified provisionally for the NCAA's at the Occidental Distance Carnival on the Bill Henry Olympic Track Friday evening.

The Seawolves competed in the 5000 meters for the first time of the outdoor season, collecting eight provisional times and two Great Northwest Athletic Conference automatic marks.

Leading the Seawolf pack on the men's track was junior Marko Cheseto. Cheseto, who has already qualified provisionally in the 1500m, posted a time of 14:13.92 to win the event. Sophomore Alfred Kangogo (14:17.74) finished runner-up, while freshman Micah Chelimo (14:36.05) was fourth.

Rookie William Ritekwiang finished 13th, earning him a trip to the GNAC's with a time of 14:57.11. The four Kenyans will need a time of 14:00.00 for the NCAA automatic bid.

Sophomores Miriam Kipngeno (16:59.24) and Ruth Keino (17:00.03) went 1 and 2 in the women's 5000 meters, while senior Laura Carr (17:09.34) was fourth,  junior Hallidie Wilt (17:23.36) in sixth, followed by Shoshana Keegan (17:31.21) in ninth - all earning the NCAA provisional mark. (The automatic time is 16:57.00.)

Freshman Katie Krehlik raced to 13th place in the 5000 meters, qualifying her automatically for the conference championships.

Junior Emma Bohman improved upon her 3000-meter steeplechase time, recording a NCAA provisional time of 11:17.99. The mark placed her third at the meet.

The Seawolves will head to Northridge, Calif., to compete in the Northridge Relays today.
