ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage gymnastics coach Paul Stoklos announced Thursday that four athletes have signed National Letters of Intent with the Seawolves. Melissa Doucette (Rochester, N.H.), Gabrielle Jannotta (McHenry, Ill.), Morgan Key (Garrison, Texas) and Emily Peterson (Indianapolis, Ind.) will join UAA as freshmen for the 2011 season.
“All four of these gymnasts have the kind of high skill levels that will help us progress as a competitive Division I program,” said Stoklos, who begins his 26th season at the UAA helm when the Seawolves host their annual Green & Gold scrimmage this Friday. “With the loss of some very talented seniors from this year’s team, I think these freshmen can step in and establish themselves as clutch performers.”
Although she has been competing most recently in France, Doucette has been a three-year Level 10 performer for her Atlantic Gymnastics club team in New Hampshire. The 5-5 Doucette was a L10 national qualifier on the mat last year, while also earning a state prep title in diving for Spaulding High School.
Jannotta, 5-5, was a L10 regional and state qualifier in Illinois this year, capturing the bronze medal in the floor exercise at the state meet as a member of Crystal Lake Gymnastics. An honor roll student in the top 1 percent of her class at McHenry East High School, she was also the balance beam champion at the 2009 IGI Chicago Style meet.
Key, 5-1, has been a 4-year L10 competitor with Texas East Gymnastics. At the 2009 L10 state meet, she took fifth place in the all-around and captured the gold medal on beam. Key was also the beam champ at this year’s Rose City Classic as well as the regional silver medalist on floor.
Peterson, 5-3, competes for Deveau’s School of Gymnastics in Indianapolis, where she was an L10 national qualifier this year. Another outstanding all-around prospect, Peterson is an honor-roll student in the top 10 percent of her class at North Central High School.
“All of these young women have acquitted themselves equally as well in the classroom as they have in the gym,” said Stoklos, whose 2010 Seawolves take the floor Friday at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex (free admittance). “As we move toward the next decade of Seawolf Gymnastics, these are the kind of student-athletes who we want as the foundation for our program.”
