Spikers crack top 25 in final rankings

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team finished No. 24 today when the American Volleyball Coaches Association released its final NCAA Division II poll of the 2009 season.

The ranking marks UAA's first appearance in the national poll since coming in at No. 25 on Nov. 3, 1992.

The Seawolves recently completed the best season in school history with a 23-8 overall record, their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. UAA also won a school-record 13 straight matches and tied the school marks for overall and conference winning percentage.

Individually, senior setter Calli Scott was the GNAC Player of the Year and received honorable mention All-America honors, while sophomore outside hitter Jackie Matthisen and junior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg earned all-region and all-conference awards.

Second-year head coach Chris Green was chosen both GNAC and West Region Coach of the Year as well.

UAA will return four starters next season, including Matthisen and Lundberg.
