Seawolves battle Lobos, fall short in exhibition

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? The Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team battled host New Mexico to a draw for 36 minutes Sunday before finally succumbing to the Division I squad, 60-49, in an exhibition game at The Pit.

The Seawolves ? ranked No. 5 in NCAA Div. II ? put all nine of their players in the scoring column, led by 11 points from senior forward Dasha Basova.

But after taking a 49-48 lead on Nicci Miller's layup with 3:22 left, the Seawolves would surrender a 12-0 Lobo run to end the game.

UNM, which is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, was led by 19 points (4-12 FG, 9-10 FT) from center Angela Hartill and 18 points (5-15 FG, 6-6 FT) from guard Amy Beggin.

The Lobos shot just 25.8 percent (16-62) from the floor but made up for that at the free throw line, where they sank 24 of 30.

Before its game-ending run from the charity stripe, the Lobos found themselves in a knockdown fight with the Seawolves. UAA led 30-25 after converting on the opening possession of the second half, and the game tightened when UNM answered with a 7-0 run.

From there, neither team would lead by more than two points ? except for a brief 41-37 UAA advantage ? until the final 3 minutes.

Junior point guard Kiki Taylor had eight points and seven rebounds for the Seawolves, while freshman forward Hanna Johansson scored seven points off the bench.

The loss snapped a five-game UAA winning streak against Division I competition, including an exhibition road victory over Washington State last year.

The Seawolves (2-1) return to the Wells Fargo Sports Complex for their home debut Saturday, Nov. 15, against fellow D-II squad Georgian Court (N.J.).
