ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team added more top international talent Wednesday as head coach Tim Moser announced the signing of Hanna Johansson to a National Letter of Intent. The Lindome, Sweden, native will be a freshman when she begins her Seawolf career this fall.
Johansson, a 6-2 forward, has played for Swedish National Team age-group squads since 2003 and recently completed her prep career at the National Basketball Academy in Jonkoping. She played for the Swedish squads that captured the silver medal at the 2007 FIBA Under-19 World Championships and the bronze medal at the 2006 FIBA Under-18 European Championships.
“Hanna should be an impact player right away in our league,” said Moser, whose Seawolves are coming off a 30-5 campaign and an NCAA Division II Semifinals appearance. “She can spot up and shoot, but her strength is really her explosiveness and a superior court awareness that allows her to attack the basket. Her coaches in Sweden rave about her intensity and leadership abilities, so obviously we're always glad to add someone with those attributes. We couldn't be more excited to have Hanna become a Seawolf.”
Johansson joins fellow international players Dasha Basova (Russia), Viki Wohlers (Germany), Danielle Dekel (Israel) and Limor Pelleg (Israel) on the Seawolf roster. She becomes the second Swedish player to suit up for Moser, following recent graduate Maria Nilsson. Nilsson, who is currently playing professionally in Spain, spent two seasons with UAA and was an All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Second Team selection as a senior.
Johansson brings UAA's 2008-09 recruiting class to six players, joining Jenna Endisch (5-9, Fr., G, Muskego, Wis./MHS) Jazzie Gaddy (5-10, Fr., F, Anchorage/East HS), Tamar Gruwell (5-8, Jr., G, Fairfield, Calif./Sierra College), Kiki Taylor (5-5, Jr., G, Colorado Springs, Colo./Western Nebraska CC) and Wohlers (6-4, So., C, Wolfenb?ttel, Germany/Oregon State).
